Preferred disk format?

I am trying to setup my iMac to host my Channels DVR. In doing so, I will be using a USB external 3TB drive. Is there a specific format that I should use on this external volume?

Furthermore, I am using an external drive so that I don’t have to worry about putting on wear/tear on the internal hard drive of my iMac (ever try taking apart an iMac to swap a crashed drive??? NO THANK YOU!). Does using a USB 3.0 drive slow down or cause lag, in a Channels session on tvOS and iOS?

USB 3 drive for recordings is the recommended setup.

You can use any format you prefer. If you’re only planning to use the drive with your Mac, then HFS+ is best.

That is what I was thinking as well. I don’t think I would gain any benefit with using the internal hard drive…especially if I have to hire a professional to swap it out if it needs to get replaced. The iMac is almost 6 years old, so at this point it’s safe to say “it can happen”
