If the same show episode is being broadcast on multiple channels in the guide, it should try to pick the channel to record from using either Favorites->HD->SD in that order. Or maybe just HD->SD. Even Favorites->All Other channels would work well for most people.
pretty sure that's how it works, although you need to make sure the channels are tagged accordingly. the HD and SD tags are few and far between anymore, so I'd suggest favoriting the HD channels.

It definitely does NOT work that way. It appears like it records the first instance of an episode in the guide regardless of quality.
In my location they seem to be rebroadcasting old episodes of This Old House on the SD channel before they rebroadcast them again on the HDTV channel. So I have a bunch of low quality recordings of that show recorded from a channel not in my Favorites list. I have figured out how to fix that with tags but it would be nice if I didn’t have to.
It DOES work that way, but only if all airings are at the same time.
If an episode airs earlier on your SD channel, a pass will record that if there are no other airings on Favorite or HD channels at the same time.
For your This Old House pass you can exclude your SD channel number in the pass.
Hence the feature request. I know there are ways for the user to work around this issue but I think the product would be better for the average user if it prioritized quality over timeliness.
but the future is not guaranteed. the only reason to have sd channels in the pass would be for fall back if the primary failed for some reason, there's no way to do this in the past. just exclude that source for that show.
edit; or you could set separate passes for HD/SD and have the SD only keep 1 so it's still recorded waiting for you if the HD misses
