Problem moving to new server

I was following the procedure to move to a new server as documented at:

After completing the install on the new server (windows virtual machine), step 2 launched edge and I could not login due to a credentials issue. I installed chrome and then closed edge. I was able to use my google credentials to login in. There is no "Restore" option at the bottom of the page.

I did some searching and discovered the http://site/restore and tried that. The old server had the data on the d: drive. My files are now on a NAS (truenas) in an SMB share which I do have access to on the new server. Restore dose not provide the option to chose a smb share (network) to load from. Can't type over the file location to add. I tried adding a directory on c: of the new server and copying the database to this directory. Selecting this database the subdirectories with the actual backups are grayed out and not selectable. Instead I emptied the directory and then copied the two files into the directory. It took that and sent me to the settings page showing the place to store the data as the directory with the backup.

Furthermore, launching channels on the original server is not working. I'd prefer to move forward yet do have the option to restore a backup on the original server if necessary.

I don't believe you can use UNC paths for your primary storage. If you assign a drive letter to a network location, I believe you can access your old storage location that way. (If your server is running on Windows as a system service, I believe there are restrictions about the service having access to network shares; there is a workaround elsewhere in the forum I believe.)

However, since your files are on the NAS, wouldn't it make more sense to run your server there, preserving your network bandwidth? If this is an older version TrueNAS, there is a FreeBSD back age you can install into a jail. Or for the newer Linux-based version, a container. Seems like such a situation would give you better performance, and without the overhead of a full Win VM.

What you could do is copy the Database folder off the NAS, use that to restore, then after the restore uncheck the DVR checkbox and fix the location to point back to the SMB share.

The VM is on Bhive on TrueNAS. This is the latest TrueNAS v 12.0 U5 1. I could not fine documentation regarding what service account the jail uses or the appropriate permissions. I'd love to run it directly.

The old server is also a VM on the same box, I could dismount the drive from the old server and mount it on the new one. Any issues doing this till I get the permissions to set up the jail?

Thank you,

Morris

There are several threads dealing with installing Channels to a jail under FreeNAS/TrueNAS. If you search for "FreeNAS" you'll probably get better results. Unfortunately, I don't have much experience in this area, so I'm afraid I can't be of much further help.

(IIRC, v12 changed the name from FreeNAS to TrueNAS CORE, but other than rebasing on a newer FreeBSD, much still remains the same. Perhaps the directions for 11.2 will work equally as well?)

Thank you TMM1. My restore is in progress. Once that completes, I'll switch the the SMB share. Will update when complete.

The restore should be instant. Where is it stuck?

No, it was not stuck. It was importing the guide data.

When I try to change to the SMB share, network is not an option. I added the SMB share as a second storage location and that was accepted. There is no trash can near the directory I set up on c:

Where is it going to record?

Thank you,

Uncheck DVR checkbox, then type whatever path you want in the box below, then check the box again.

When I uncheck DVR, it jumps to set up storage location. Then I'm back to not being able to type over the location and network is not an option.

Ah okay, that's annoying.

So the add storage bit lets you specify a network location, but the regular one doesn't.

Let me take a look and fix that.

Thank you,

I appreciate your effort.

Build uploading now with the fix. Usually takes about 20 minutes.

Thank you,

I assume I want a "Check for a pre-release"

Yep

v2021.09.01.1900 is available now

It is working fine. Making the change was a little bumpy yet I was able to get it done. Could use some TLC in the future.

Noticed that when viewing on the web, the maximum volume each time I view a video which is rather annoying. I believe it used to remember the volume level.

Thank you for the help
