Qestion about recording

I record a lot of programs from TCM. Many times, the movie ends but the recording continues until the alloted time on the guide. At this point, it shows 0 in size of the recording in my movie folder. I don't think my computer folder shows the movie size until the recording stops and is completed.

If I manually stop the recording thru the manage option in my Channels DVR when the movie actually ends, do I lose the movie, or will it show as complete with the actually recorded size at the time that I stopped it?

I could test a movie on this, but was wondering if someone had a quick answer.

Thanks

I don't understand your problem with the size being 0. That's weird.

Anyway, to answer your question: no, you will not lose the recording when you stop it manually. You will have whatever has been recorded up to that moment. :slightly_smiling_face:

Edit: I forgot to mention that the size and duration of the recording will match what's actually on the disk.

Thanks for the help. Just to clarify. The size in the movie folder shows the size as 0 while the recording is in progress - then it shows the completed size when the recording stops.

That is why I was confused - thinking that if the size still showed 0 when I manually stopped the recording, I would lose the recording.

I appreciate your help!

The size in the movie folder shows the size as 0 while the recording is in progress - then it shows the completed size when the recording stops.

That's because while it's in progress, the recording is stored in a temporary file folder - once it's done, then it's put into the movie folder

Very common and completely normal.

What Operating System are you using? I'm surprised you aren't seeing the file size grow as it is writing. On macOS and Linux you should see it growing every second. I'm not certain about Windows.

That's incorrect. The recordings are written in-place.

Hi,

I'm using Windows 11. The size of the recording does stay at 0 until the recording ends or is stopped. That is why I was confused that I might lose the recording if stopped before the alloted guide time. Just for reference, the name of the movie does show up in the movie folder - just not the size until complete.

Very interesting! Thanks for letting us know about the file size. As others said, you won't lose what was recorded if you end a recording early.

Here are screenshots of a movie that is in the process of recording. FYI
The movie was about 45 minutes into the recording.

Is your Z: drive a network mount? Not reading a file size on a file that is marked open and being written to on a network volume is something I've seen in the past.

At first, I was not sure what you meant about the size of zero.

Same behavior for me on Windows too. I can see the file on the disk with a size of zero until it's finished. Recently upgraded to Windows 11 but it was the same with Windows 10. It's not just movies, TV shows are the same.

I observed it and never thought anything of it. :slightly_smiling_face:

Edit: just to add that my drive is internal to the PC.

Not sure what you mean by network mount, but I'd say no. It is an external 6 TB WD hard drive connected directly to my computer by USB. I think it is Windows' handling of the file and nothing to do with how the hard drive is accessed. Same behavior if an internal hard drive is used as the destination drive.
