Random frame drops with 50fps deinterlaced video

Hi, not sure if anyone else is having this problem. I'm using multiple 2nd and 3rd gen ATV 4Ks, watching UK freeview channels with a HDHomeRun.

On random occasions, the video output will decide to drop frames constantly, maybe a handful every second. I can't find a pattern as to when it happens. Usually it resolves itself by pausing and playing, or restarting the app.

I've noticed it only seems to happen when the display FPS in the stats page is different from 50.000, which is what my TV and Apple TV is set to, and what the channels are outputting once deinterlaced. Sometimes it says 49.999 fps, sometimes it's 50.001.

It only appears to happen with the default video player, when switched to Legacy i've rarely had an issue.

I've attached a pic of one of these instances. When played, the dropped frames increases steadily every second, and the actual experience on screen is super juddery and bad.

At least you have a workaround of using the Legacy Player. That may be a hint for the developers or somone else. I'm wondering about a few things:

  • Transcoding, is it happening and if so is your server up to the task
  • Probably not a disk issue yet you should check to verify your disk is OK
  • Network: Test speed to server from affected client(s) and report results

The live channels are streamed directly from the HDHomeRun so I assume there's nothing about my server that should be limiting this, and of course means no transcoding, only deinterlacing on the Apple TVs themselves should be taking place.

Speed is more than fine also. Its happening on Apple TVs with both gigabit ethernet and Wifi 6 connections. I've double checked the stats views and there's never been any network drops or bandwidth issues, it only appears to be on the video output / deinterlacing side - which is visible in the dropped frames being on the output only.

Legacy player definitely helps the issue yeah, although it adds another problem of audio sync being different compared to default video and the other apps I use, so bad lip sync is definitely a trade-off you have to accept.
