I recently have came into contact with 3 brand new PIs. One 4GB and two 8GB. I currently use a Mac Mini M1 for my server install but have been considering switching to the PI just because my Mac updates so much and kills anyone watching TV until Im home and can login again. My question, can I run Channels DVR and Home Assistant, or does the image for Channels take use of the whole PI? It seems like its custom firmware so I assume it uses the whole thing. Also, I have two out of home clients that run from time to time, but set to original stream so there wouldnt be transcoding issues. Could a PI handle that, or can anyone give me their two cents on the things I should consider for PI vs Mini use?
- Yes, it's whole image. You would need 1 pi each for Channels and home assistant.
- What's updating on M1 that often? I have one, and it's not that frequent at all?
- As long as you stick to a single stream at a time, the pi should be able to handle OOH viewing pretty well.

Just updates I guess? It updated to 12.4 yesterday while I was at work and stuck at the login screen so channels didn’t work until I got home.
Can you elaborate on the OOH single stream? Is that only if it’s transcoding or no matter what?
I was under impression all OOH was transcoded.
Only if the client's target bitrate and/or resolution is less than the source stream. Otherwise the stream is simply remuxed .
Correct and I can even force them so that they can’t set the client to be anything other than original which I have done already.
