Recoding Job Error Directory Access Denied

Hello, I couldn’t find this discussed elsewhere. I’m using the Channels DVR on a Mac and an HD Prime.

On some scheduled recordings, it is giving me a job error. I notice those recordings are attempting to record to a wrong directory and I’m getting a permission denied message in the log.

I’m going to check file permissions in OSX and make some changes there but it’s been really limited to which shows give me this error. I’ve tried recoding off the channel with scheduled and instant recoding, and both work fine. It’s only come down to 2 shows over the past 10 days, happening twice with each show on subsequent weeks.

Can you please paste the log line and error messages you’re seeing?

Most definitely!

Supergirl is one of the shows. Here you see it failing to record to one directory while Adventure Time records to the correct one. This happens also with Saturday Night Live and there’s no other recordings occurring during those times.

Can you run these commands and post the output:

ls -alhd /Users/manor/TV
ls -alhd /Users/manor/TV/Supergirl
ls -alhd /Users/manor/TV/Gotham

Did you move your DVR from another computer? What kind of drive are you recording to?

illegal option

Yes, I did move it. Same drive but it was from that directory.

Please paste the full output. Did you copy/paste the commands (instead of retyping them).

I did retype them. I was going between mobile and desktop.

Here’s what it gave me:

ls: illegal option – /
usage: ls [-ABCFGHLOPRSTUWabcdefghiklmnopqrstuwx1] [file …]

Looks like a mistype. Please copy/paste if possible.

Basically it looks like some of those folders have the wrong permissions somehow, so the DVR isn’t able to create files in them.

Thanks! This seems to be much more telling:

Deep-Thought-2:~ manor$ ls -alhd /Users/manor/TV
drwxr-xr-x 19 manor staff 646B Jan 30 20:59 /Users/manor/TV
Deep-Thought-2:~ manor$ ls -alhd /Users/manor/TV/Supergirl
drwxr-xr-x 5 204 wheel 170B Jan 9 18:59 /Users/manor/TV/Supergirl
Deep-Thought-2:~ manor$ ls -alhd /Users/manor/TV/Gotham
drwxr-xr-x 4 manor staff 136B Jan 30 19:00 /Users/manor/TV/Gotham
Deep-Thought-2:~ manor$

Ah man, I think I just figured it out.

I had a previously recorded folder for both Supergirl and Saturday Night Live already in that folder. I’m guessing if I remove those, it’ll work fine.

Sorry if this was all it was and thanks so much for the quick response and help.

You can use Finder to fix the permissions too

Or you can run the following in Terminal.app. It will ask you for your password but then should fix all the permissions:

find /Users/manor/TV/ -type d | xargs sudo chown manor:staff

Thanks so much! I was going to try changing the permissions when I saw the old folders in there. The new ones made through Channels DVR didn’t have the “wheel” user but the older ones made in HDHomeRun did. I was getting ready to add the user before realizing what was happening.

Again, I appreciate the work you’re doing and am happy to be able to help support it.

Oh I see, you re-used your HDHR DVR directory. Probably better to start clean with Channels DVR, but if you fix the permissions it should be fine too.
