I am using an HDHR tuner with an antenna, but also have a TVE integration from a family members Xfinity subscription. Some of my locals come in over the antenna but are also available through TVE. I have the HDHR set as the first priority as it sends to have better picture quality, and 5.1 sound vs only stereo on the TVE stream. When I look at my passes, I can see it listing both channels and in the correct order. I assume this is so if the first channel has no signal it will fail over to the other. The problem is I've never seen it do that. My antenna usually picks up enough strength for a watchable video but if the weather is bad, it will get too weak and will break up and become unwatchable. In those cases, I wish it would have failed over to the TVE stream because even though the quality won't be as good, it would at least play smoothly. The recording will even indicate that it had "interruptions" yet it doesn't care to do anything about it! Is it not possible for Channels to "analyze" the signal maybe a minute before the show starts recording and decide if the quality is good enough to record OTA vs failing over to another source? It does this when I select the show from the guide. I'd even be fine if it recorded BOTH so I'd have a backup. I've seen some threads asking similar questions back several years but nothing recently so looking to see if there has been any recent changes or thoughts on this issue.
To answer the Topic, the only ways I could record the same program on both HDHR and TVE sources at the same time is manual curl based recordings, or two servers (one w/HDHR source, one w/TVE source).
As far as failing over with a poor signal from an HDHR, I don't see that happening. What if the program starts fine and 22 minutes into it the signal degrades (for whatever reason). I know the DVR doesn't detect macro-blocking or other artifacts while recording and as long as the signal strength/quality is enough for the HDHR to stay locked onto the channel it will keep recording. I'm sure other users that know their OTA signal is unreliable would either hide those channels or set the passes to record from TVE instead.
