Recording Question

As a recent convert from TIVO I have found a few situations where channels is lacking as well as some features that are better. The biggest thing I have problems with now is the listing of recordings. Recordings show up by date. Is there a way to list recordings by shows recorded?

Let's say I want to watch Survivor, I would like a list of the program names like TIVO did and select that item and watch the oldest episodes first, followed by the rest in order. I find with Channels that the list of recording can grow quite long and it is easy to miss an older recording and then finding out you missed an episode leading up to the one you just watched.

Thanks

Instead of the Recordings tab, try the Library tab where you should see pictures of the shows with recently recorded and the next episode to watch for recently watched shows

I love Channels but :100: agree that TiVo did this much better. Sure, thumbnails/pictures are more visually pleasing but sometimes just text is better for navigation. This is particularly true with episodes where (for me at least) seeing a picture for each episode adds absolutely nothing to the experience. I’d rather see more text describing the episode etc.

There’s also an entire TV Shows section. You can access it from the Library section or even use Settings to put it in the main navigation.

I agree with Maddox and would suggest you go into Settings and add TV Shows to your main navigation window. That's what I use, here's what it looks like:

You can sort the shows by Date Updated, Date Added, Alpabetical, etc, and the episodes by oldest to newest or newest to oldest, whatever you prefer.

Is that your view when first go to TV Shows from the main navigation panel? Because it’s not mine. I see a Favorites section at the top then “Recently Watched” then I have to select “All Shows” before I see that view.

I may have changed some default settings though.

You are using the Enhanced Library Browsing, which is very much suggested for larger libraries.

Yes, that is what I see. Maddox beat me to the punch, but he's right it sounds like you're using the Library view.

If you want to change the default navigation, you'll have to go into Clients tab on the web ui, scroll down to Global Client Settings at the bottom, click General then Manage Navigation. From there, I would suggest you check all the boxes but the Kids menu, then click Add Settings. Make sure all the tabs are enabled in the right window, then go back to your TV and play around with the Channels app to figure out which navigation tabs you prefer. Once you've decided, return to the web ui to turn off all the tabs you don't like.

Thanks. Was aware of all of the other stuff but never understood what “enhanced library” did exactly but wouldn’t have guessed this. I know I played with turning it off an on some time ago but that’s probably when I was trying to find a way to make Channels easier to navigate for both myself and my wife. Since “Recordings” offers a view most similar to what we are used to seeing in TiVo and DirecTV’s garbage dvr, that’s where I often start.

I know I’m probably beating a dead horse but I still wish recordings were grouped together in that same text based UI or at least that it didn’t take so many steps/clicks to get from Recording to a view that shows all episodes of a show.

Sorting by recently updated, gets me closest to what I want but not quite. Tbh, it’s tolerable to me since I appreciate of all of the many advantages of Channels over other DVR solutions but it is making it harder to wean my wife off of TiVo. Though that may be a lost cause with the recent loss of NBC TVE.
