Recording the same network show from two channels

I live between cities and have two HDHRs attached to separate antennas pointed in different directions. I would like to record (as one example) the Today show from NBC affiliates in both cities (each have different local news and weather segments).

If I set a recording, the DVR Schedule on the web interface shows BOTH channels listed under the logo. I can then click Queued > Edit and choose one or the other, but not both.

If it matters, Channels DVR is running on an Nvidia Shield with USB HDD. I normally watch using Fire TV Stick 4Ks at each television.

Unfortunately the dvr does not make it possible to record the same episode twice.

What's your use-case? Does the signal vary between the two hdhrs?

Since TVE capability was added, a further use case would be: compare Cable vs TVE recordings as a further factor in determining which channel offers the better experience.

Signal variation from one day to another can sometimes be a factor, however, my question was due to local programming differences (news, weather, sports) between the channels during the "local segments" of the show (5 minutes each half-hour)

Sorry, you've lost me here. The only way I know to choose what to record is from the guide or from a search and then create a Series Pass. Could you point me to more information? Thanks

Channels can view/record from 3 different sources:

Cable (Prime - SD device with cable card)
TVE (from Internet broadcast) - many channels are available via cable co: Xfinity, Fios, DirectTV
OTA (Other SD devices)

Hence, in my area I could record on all 3 simultaneously, if available, i.e., PBS channel

The question is which provides the best quality in relationship to cost of transmission. Each user has to make their own decision.

My Priority is set this way ...

SD Connects
1 Prime
TVE
2nd Prime.

Clients
SD Connects
2 nd Prime
TVE
1rst Prime.

Thanks for the explanation. I guess I am suffering from tunnel vision since my only use is OTA

Efficient :grinning:

I’d say your setup never has problems with scheduling conflicts...Hassle free

Not true. I can't (don't know how to) record the same show from two different TV stations at the same time. This actually is a problem for me. Even though it may be the same NETWORK show, the LOCAL content is different since the cities are over 100 miles apart (I am between them)

Understand your request. In your example, these two showings are different (5min local news/weather from different source)...although DVR thinks they are the same, hence your request...which currently cannot be done.

IMO, definite use case example for @tmm1 to analyze to see if a Channels DVR basic rule can be changed.

You have a good case ... I can see why you would need this.

I appreciate the replies. At least I think I now somewhat understand the technical reason for the issue. In some way I guess I was expecting the programming behavior of my VHS and Beta VCRs

I agree it would be nice to have a "over-ride and record anyway" option.
The only work-around I know of is what I'm currently setting up.
Two separate Channels DVR servers.
Not everyone is ready for that.

ChDVR#1 using HDHRPRIME
ChDVR#2 using TVE

I just happen to have my six year old NAS in addition to the new replacement already wired up.

One option that's been requested that may solve it is to allow a "Manual Recording" on a specified channel, day, time and duration, or an over-ride to record as a duplicate from the guide, what's on now, what's coming up, etc.

For the show that it will not schedule, could you record the preceding show and simply extend enough minutes so it captures your other local news. Not very elegant but seems like it should work.

A definite "Why didn't I think of that!" moment. I'll give it a try. Thanks!
