Remote Access - 3 options

I’ve used web ui access, but which is the best for remote access…

@tmm1
Remote access is only available via web, tvOS and iOS at this time.

Since you didn’t get an answer for this, I can help you out.

The web-ui is great if you are using a computer, tablet, or phone to watch TV / DVR. It also offers the best advanced pass options, has a search that suggests the best new shows & movies, and is the easiest way to configure devices/channels/recordings. You can airplay the videos to an ATV, but this is not the best solution for watching remote TV / DVR on a TV set.

The tvOS remote DVR is perfect if you are using an Apple TV to watch remote TV / DVR. Just bring your ATV to the hotel room and connect to wifi. Sometimes this requires some additional steps to get the wifi working. But, once set up at your hotel, it works just like the ATV setup you use at home. And it works really well, too. This is the best solution for watching on a TV-set using an ATV. It is not the best solution for watching on a phone or computer.

IMO, the iOS app is unnecessary for DVR users, since the web-ui already does everything that the iOS app does plus more. But some people like the interface. Regardless, this solution is one way to watching remote TV / DVR on a phone. It is not a good solution for watching on a computer or TV set.

Hope that helps.

Thanks so much for the feedback. Simplifies my choices for future travel!

I never travel with the ATV, too big and heavy. Instead I use my iphone and an hdmi cable/adapter. Less stuff to carry and easier to get on hotel WiFi. The web player is not as nice of a player.

I really don’t like the web interface, and relegate it to be my Windows client.

I am not sure what kind of ATV you have. Is it made by Apple? My ATV has these specs:
Height: 1.4 inches
Width: 3.9 inches
Depth: 3.9 inches
Weight: 15 ounces

It literally fits in my pocket.

So many options now when traveling…previously was out 3 of 4 weeks, many times to NW Canada (French speaking provinces)…Channels capabilities would have been ideal.

Now only travel 3-4 times a year and have used web ui for Channels with great success. Usually only on an iPad but do have an HDMI adapter. I’ve also not utilized an ATV on the road, but this prospect is intriguing.

For local use, the web ui has been fantastic, but I’ll definitely try ATV on next long term road trip and also hdmi adapter with iPad, to determine my best option. Previously, wasn’t able to deprive the family of one of our 2 ATVs, however since release of ATV 4K, we now have 3 and an older 4th gen is now mine!

Thank you both for your contributions and direction.
