Remote access from ATV

Hi Channels,

First of all I must say that I really like your product. I use it throughout my house both on ATV and iOS.
I would also like to use your product remotely.

I have read in the forum that many others have done this with OpenVPN in tap mode. My question is: would it be possible to do this without a VPN setup, like this guy is doing (https://stuff.purdon.ca/?page_id=472), but still use the Channels interface? i.e. forward the relevant ports on the router, spoof the TTL and use the “add tuner manually” feature in channels?

I am aware that this can be accomplished with the DVR add-in. But I don’t need the DVR capability (only live TV) and therefore find it too much to pay $8/month for it.

Best, Thomas.

Opening your hdhomerun to the internet without any security is highly discouraged. If you opened the relevant ports (80, 5004, 65001) over tcp and UDP and fixed the ttl, then theoretically it should work.

Also, unless you have an extend (and even with an extend) the bandwidth requirements on your uplink would make it very difficult to reliably watch from the outside. (an h264 stream needs ~ 3-10mbs up link; an mpeg2 needs ~ 8-14mbs up link)… So unless you are on fios or an expensive cable plan this may not really work [most cable around here the default uplink is 5-7mb; max 10-15 on the 100down 10 up plan for cable; but don’t get me started on Cable Co Marketing “Lies”]

What you are paying for with the DVR is not just the “Guide” for the recording scheduling; but the transcoding features and the ability to skip commercials. The DVR actually has transcoding features that can re-encode the stream to work with many uplinks… even going to cellular data. There are also many features that are in development (though on hold right now) that depend on the DVRs transcoding functions to work (FireTV support; Roku support; etc) ;
