Remote Channel

This probably a very naive question. Don’t be too harsh.
Can iOS Channels be used when away from home? The same way I use port forwarding for my security cameras.

This is not officially supported. The HDHomeRun is meant to be used inside your local home network, and the video streams it sources are very large and not suitable for streaming over the internet.

That said, some of our customers have had luck setting up a VPN server inside their house and then connecting to their VPN using their iOS device. That way it appears to the app as if you are at home and you can watch TV outside. However, you need an internet connection with a large upstream bandwidth pipe to be able to do this.

Because EyeTV supports this, I was hopeful Channels would also. Thanks.

I'm using a plex plugin that let's me do this. Used it all week when we were at the beach and got better quality than the direcTV at the beach house!

EDIT should clarify channels is not involved. This is simply Plex picking up the HDHomeRun, handling all the transcoding, etc.

Thanks, I came here specifically to see if Channels iOS could be used remotely and the Plex solution is fantastic. (I’d still love to see remote availability to be native in Channels eventually.)

There’s another plex plugin called HDGrandSlam which is supposed to work well too: https://www.silicondust.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=125&t=42711
