My Celeron machine takes about 15 minutes to scan a 1 hour show for commercials. Would it be possible to add an option to scan while recording on machines that can handle it? This is a feature I miss from MythTV.

How does this work in mythtv? Is there an option to enable it? Does it always do it, or only when you start watching something that’s still recording?
I don’t have a working mythtv setup to test any more but recall it had the concept of ‘simultaneous jobs’ (typically the number of cores) that could run on a given back-end for commercial scanning or transcoding. If a core was available while a show was recording it would be scanned and commercials marked as it recorded. For me the result was that commercial marks would be available as soon as recording stoped.

I ran mythtv for about 7 years and that was an awesome feature. And, yes, I recall that it was able to run simultaneous jobs based upon the number of cores as well.
Commercial marks available while recording would be even better!
