Roku and Apple TV?

Good evening everyone. Newbie here and am in the process of purchasing the individual components to get the Channels app set up on the Apple TV. We are doing a trial of Netflix and Hulu right now, but we’re finding that there are still a few shows we would like to watch and they are currently on Roku. So is it possible to have the Roku app pull into the Channels app? Or does it not work like that? We haven’t purchased the Channels app yet for we’re waiting for the Synology and HDHomeRun pieces first. Thanks for any help!

Not sure what you mean… Roku is a device like Apple TV, not an app.

Well I saw the Roku app on the App store, so I just wasn’t sure how that worked.

Hmm not sure.

Either way, channels only works with the hdhomerun.

There is a Roku app on the iPhone/iPad App Store, but it’s to turn your iPhone into a Roku Remote. Since the Roku and Apple TV basically do the same thing, you don’t need this app because your not going to buy a Roku, your Using an Apple TV which comes with a remote and lets you use your iPhone/iPad as a remote as well.

Thanks for the explanation! There’s a massive learning curve of all the different technologies…

So with that out of the way, Channels only lets you watch the TV your already getting. So are you on cable or Antenna TV?

Which shows are you trying to watch?

Did you buy a HD Homerun Prime or The Connect or Extend?

I am a long time Uverse user. We just purchased a HD Homerun Extend and the Synology is coming later this week. As for the channels, I have a 5 yr old that loves everything on the Disney Jr. channel and it’s extremely frustrating that it appears you can on use those apps if you have a cable or satellite subscription. Any ideas?

Well, is sounds like you want to drop uverse and watch tv channels from an antenna and augment with apps.

Hulu has the most Disney Jr content outside of keeping cable.

The problem here is that Disney relies on cable companies as they rely on Disney content, hence the stupid requirement for the cable subscription.

I don’t know what your real goals are, so I wouldn’t know what to help to offer since you seem disappointed with Hulu and Uverse.

DirecTV Now subscription will give you full access to Disney channels, including the standalone apps. I have a subscription for this, which I combine with a pair of HDHomeRun Extends to pull in ABC, NBC, CBS, Fox, PBS, and MyTV… the channels that you won’t get live with DirecTV Now.

I thought about that too, but for 70/mo., I could just keep cable, throw in a prime and enjoy the nice channels app instead of all the little broken apps or Direct TV’s app.

Oh, didn’t realize it costs that much now. I am on the original $35 plan.

I am not saying that combining all of these services is a great option. I prefer Channels with just my local antenna broadcasts. This makes for the majority of my viewing. But for someone who needs the Disney channels, I thought I would mention that a separate subscription is an option.
