Can anyone tell me how the universal guide on the new samsung TV's works? Does it play with channels or no?
Channels is not available on nor does it integrate with any Smart TV platforms.

No.
One caveat would be smart TVs like my Sony Bravia that are based on Android TV. These smart TVs have the Google Play Store. I installed the Channels client on my TV this way, and it runs fine. I happen to prefer to do everything on my AppleTV streaming box, but Channels does work fine in the Android TV environment on this smart TV. Doesn't integrate with AndroidTV's "Live Channels" app but Channels DVR is much better than that, anyway.
