Seek Back

Hello,
I am new to the Channels App / Channels DVR and love it. But there is one thing that is extremely annoying. The 7 second Seek Back can be extremely slow. Sometimes it takes as long as 5 full seconds (or more) just to jump back 7 seconds! I only seem to notice this with live TV or while watching programs that are currently recording. Previously recorded programs seem fine and the Seek Back function is instantaneous.

Is there any way to enhance this? This one annoyance is making me miss my TiVo… :frowning:

My Specs:
Apple TV 4K
HD HomeRun Prime
WD My Cloud EX2 Ultra - NAS
LAN is full Gigabit Ethernet

Thanks!
-James

Hmm that’s weird. You see this watching live tv? Does it happen every time?

Live TV seeks are almost instantaneous for me. Recordings might be a bit slower but not on the order of seconds.

Can you verify that you are connecting directly to the hdhomerun locally, and not via remote DVR? On the Settings tab of the app, does it say “via DVR” under your hdhomerun?

I too have this issue with seeking in recordings. Some jumps are very quick others than 5 seconds or more. Press and hold for FF/RW is also problematic, most of the time it will go for 30 seconds or so and then start playing again even though I am still holding down on the touch pad. All of this may be related to my DVR setup with the engine running on windows and the storage being on a mycloud network share.

This is an issue with bandwidth. It sounds like the connection to your Apple TV is a little low.

You could try using Ethernet if possible, this would give you seek results that mirror the speed you see with a local buffer while watching live tv. You could also check your WiFi speeds. Maybe rearrange your WiFi so it has a little better connection. Or maybe a faster WiFi acess point could speed it up.

It’s definitely an issue with the speed between your Channels DVR and your Apple TV.

@jamesbp, hmm I just noticed you said it’s in gigabit. That’s really weird. Have you done any speed tests on your Apple TV? That kind of delay is really slow. Maybe your nas is going slow?

Those speeds are def not the norm or even inside anything anyone has ever mentioned.

It’s going through a hard wired Moca connection, I’m able to watch BD rips fine at higher bitrates than cable

Super weird. I use a MOCA 2.0 system myself, getting around 800mbit.

Please check if your recordings are h264 or MPEG2. I’m looking into a slow seek back bug that affects some h264 recordings.

The slow seek back bug affecting h264 channels/recordings has been fixed in the latest tvOS version available on the App Store.
