Can somebody list the advantages of the shield over the server to run channels dvr server service?
Simplicity, multi-purpose
You can't really compare devices like this since different use cases warrant different server setups. A PC ≠ SHIELD ≠ NAS. These are all different devices with different purposes that channels happens to run on. It would be easier to plan a server by first defining the requirements that will be placed on it.
A limitation of using a Nvidia Shield as a Channels DVR server, you can NOT use YouTube TV as a TVE source. (at least last i read here...if that is no longer the case, I'm sure someone will correct me)
Personally, I really like using a Raspberry Pi4.
However, it has it limitations compared to a more powerful PC or device.
Only one transcode stream support, slower commercial skip detection.
I don't have YouTubeTV to try, but in order to get Vanced YouTube to work, MicroG needs to be installed, despite Google Play Services being present. Possibly installing MicroG will enable YouTubeTV.
I just switched my server to a Pi 4 (8 GB). What are the transcoding issues you mention above? Just want to be on the lookout for any issues. Thanks!
It not an issue. Just limitation.
The Channels page mentions it for the Pi.
Its hardware support is limited to ONE transcode stream.
Meaning, you can only have one remote viewing stream, or one stream via the web gui(since that uses transcoding) Try any more than one, and it will come to a hault, its cpu overloaded.
Compared to say a Intel NUC with a Intel i7, that cpu can handle 4 transcode streams.
