This has happened to me a few times and as recently as this week. Apple TV 4th gen. I’m standing up select the onscreen watch button toss the remote onto the couch and it mutes. When try shaking it it won’t unmute. Each time id shake it the mute symbol reappears on the screen. Haven’t tried the work around mentioned above because I just found this thread today.
I just had exactly this issue. Selecting / deselecting the audio channel from the top menu made no difference (tried several times). Even force quitting the app and reopening made no difference. Eventually it worked when I quit playback and started again (even though doing so several times before did not work). This was while playing back a recording. I submitted diagnostics while it was stuck in mute just in case that helps.
