Shield update

The shield is no longer supported but I still use my daily and want to upgrade it. The channels team could not answer this and suggested I asked the community. I hope someone here can.

I have been using a SHIELD for my channels server for many years. When the 9.0 problem happened, I did not upgrade my shield. It is still on Android 8.2.3 I want to update to 9.1 but am concerned about breaking my stable system. Can this be done without issues?

Thanks

Perhaps it is because you already answered the question. The Shield is no longer supported.
Do this:
Use the Shield as a client (It is very good) and install CDVR on one of the many devices.
see here: Channels — Channels DVR Server

We didn’t “not” answer. We said that we don’t know.

Because it’s not a supported platform for Channels DVR Server anymore, it’s not something we test, or know how it works on the latest versions of the shield firmware.

We literally just do not know.

Wow. Tough crowd. The shield works great. I just want to update the OS. There were posts on doing this in the past. I am just looking for guidance a what path to take to update it from the experts here. I am sure it has been done. Or I will just keep it as is.

All good. Sorry to make it sound like you didn’t respond. It is great software. I took your suggestion to see if the community has an answer. Hope some of the group has experience with it.

If it works as it is. . . Dont update it.

I have an updated Shield with a server installation, that I only use for test or possible backup if my main minipc should have problems. I almost never use the server on it, but the original problem that kept it from working at all as a server has been fixed. It has been a couple of months since I last verified it was basically working, but I have never done a thorough check out. Seems to me Channels could get a server update at any time and the Shield (previous or current OS) could start failing and without support there is nothing that could be done. I switched to a minipc two years ago. It cost about the same as a Shield, uses little power and very quiet. Maybe you will stay lucky using the Shield until you don't need Channels anymore

Thanks for the insightful answer. I guess I will not update the Shield. I had not considered a Channels update that could break it.

Its not hard to move your current recordings and all settings over to a new server. You are not going to lose anything. Install it somewhere that is supported and you won't have to worry about this.
As @ari_tafari mentioned, its not like your Shield becomes a brick either. You still have a good streaming device that you can update and use for many things, including as a Channels DVR client.
