I’m trying to watch a show while it is recording but it’s basically unwatchable (stuttering and skipping). Is that a limitation or should we be able to watch while it’s recording? I’m using a 2016 MBP as the server but a USB hard drive for storage while viewing on an ATV. Recordings seem to playback just fine after the recording is finished. Is the hard drive the limitation or is this just a limitation of channels DVR?

This may be your network. I can watch a show while it’s recording that and another show without problem.
Is your DVR plugged in or over wifi?
I just put in new Eero routers so I feel like the network should be solid, but what’s the best way to test and rule that out? My MBP is connected via wireless. Also just to clarify, I’m watching the show that is currently recording not a different show. Thanks for the feedback
The DVR is the MacBook Pro and it’s connected to Wifi. Does it need to be hard wired?
If you’re able to plug it in, that’s definitely the first thing I would try.

I just remembered the new MacBooks don’t have Ethernet ports. A true stand alone HTPC is in my future it seems. Any other options to test my wifi connection strength without hard wiring until I can get the adapter?
Oh yea… and the USB->Ethernet they sell is only 100mbps, so it’s not even going to help.
Does the ATV stutter if you watch a different already recorded show while one is recording? If not, then it’s probably not a bandwidth issue.
No, I tried watching an already recorded show and it played back flawlessly. I just tested a different channel to rule out any weather related to the antennae. The second channel played back better but still basically unwatchable as it was recording. I also tested it on the web player on the MBP and that was jumpy too. Any ideas?
Hmm you mean you tried to watch the recording again, or tried to watch live tv?
Could be an issue with the drive I guess, although no one else has reported a similar issue. And playback of a recorded file vs still-recording file is exactly the same.
Does the stutter get better if you pause the player and let it buffer? If you rewind and rewatch does it stutter in the same place?
What filesystem is the USB drive using?
Ok, I’m going to chalk this up now to an antenna issue. I’m having issues watching live tv now. It’s a cloudy night so maybe that’s the issue? I just purchased this guy and mounted it on the roof pointing in the right direction. Any tips for resolving this? Or is that just part of the deal with the antenna?
