Simultaneous recordings

My setup is Windows 10 PC running the Channels DVR server connected via USB to an external 1T drive. I use Locast and subscribe to Philo. I don't currently have any HDHR devices attached but I'm able to record and watch programming. Is the Channels Server providing 1 tuner function or is something else going on. Why would I need to attach an HDHR device if everything is working just fine without one? I assume there is something I don't understanding about how things work and I would appreciate if someone could tell me where I can get nubie questions like this answered. Thanks in advance.

A HDHomerun device is not required.

Sounds like you have it working as designed.

You don't, who says you do?

The recording from Locast are in stereo. If you want 5.1 sound, you will need an antenna with HDHR. If you are happy with the sound, no need to switch.

When doing simultaneous recordings, Locast's website and Philo via TVE are both providing your Channels DVR server with multiple tuners.

And both sources are stereo only.

HDHR is significantly higher video and audio quality than locast. The commercial detection is faster. The channels tune faster and are more reliable. Plus the content it is totally free if you live in a city with OTA. But if you don't care for any of those improvements, there is no reason to upgrade.
