Sound issue

I’m having some trouble getting Dolby surround from some OTA channels. Some channels will show 5.1, while the others show stereo.

NBC/ABC affiliate shows stereo. Fox and cbs show multichannel in (i.e. 5.1).

Not sure what would be causing this. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a HDHomeRun Quattro with a denom AVR-x4400 receiver.

Thanks

Jason

TVE is in stereo. Turn off locals via TVE if you don't want to record from them.

This is happening even when the locals are selected to be played via OTA instead of TVE.

Just curious...how do you turn off TVE for the locals?

The same way you turned it on- the checkbox on the bottom of the DVR web UI.

You can also change the priority of the tuners on the dvr web UI

I have changed the priority to be the OTA signal as opposed to the TVE option, and it's still doing the same thing.

When I connect the antenna directly to the TV, I'm getting the surround sound through all the OTA channels. Only when I watch the channels through channels do I get the stereo only, and it's only for two of the channels (NBC and ABC is the same affiliate and use the same broadcast tower).

Is Surround Sound enabled in the client app? Also, where did you change the priority? The client and DVR maintain separate priority settings, so make sure you changed the priority in the client. (The reason I ask is that NBC and ABC both offer local affiliates through TVE, so that may account for the differences.)

OK. I have logged in to the DVR service and unchecked the " Local Networks via TV Everywhere" option. The only option I see on the client app is the "Test Surround Sound" option. I don't see anything where I can toggle Stereo/Surround, or turn it on/off.

Only NBC in my area offer a local TVE stream. ABC does not. In fact, I can't even watch my local ABC affiliate in the ABC app.

The client app also has the HDHomeRun Quatro listed as the first priority, as does the DVR web UI.

Is there anything else I need to do? Could the Receiver be causing an issue?

In the web UI: Hit record on one of the stations, then click View Details on the recording and it will show you the underlying audio track details.

OK, not sure I went to the right spot, but I went to the log on the DVR web UI and highlighted the information from shows on the channel in question. I've pasted it below:

The show "Bull" and "All Rise" on WDTV (CBS) recorded and played in surround sound, while "The Baker and The Beauty" on WBOY (ABC) recorded and played in stereo. Based on the log information I posted, they both show being recorded in .mpg, but only the CBS shows are playing back in surround.

Does this help? Is there somewhere else I can look for additional information?

Here is the log information for two shows that were just running. As you can see, the cbs channel plays surround, the nbc does not, but they look the same.

I see where track #1 is different, and I'm assuming that's what is causing the issue. What I don't understand is, if I connect my antenna to my tv directly, both of these stations will play in 5.1. I am only getting the stereo issue while watching through the DVR (both live and recorded).

Any idea what to do? Any idea why?

Not sure what to tell you. Looks like the signal is coming in stereo. You can try the official HDHR app or VLC to compare and see what it shows for number of audio channels.

OK thanks. I didn't even think twice about this until I was testing a new antenna and by plugging it directly into the tv, I got surround on the channels that had only been supplying stereo. I thought it might be something I needed to do with the settings.

Thanks.

Does HDHR have an app for apple tv out now? I didn't think it was available.

I'll have to play around with VLC to see.

thanks for spending the time to help figure this out.
