Still getting Connection Lost

Not looking to hijack this thread but I have noticed after the recent update I get Connection Lost (-17) error when using ESPN via Hulu TV Everywhere. Most other channels work fine without issue so it just seems to be certain ones with ESPN being the most pronounced (I assumed it was ESPN provider).

Just thought this might be helpful because I changed nothing on my system and it started happening recently.

Good luck.
I've been chasing this problem for MONTHS.!
Hopefully I can solve it tomorrow.

It shouldn't matter as long as you follow the instructions for your router.
If the router uses a dhcp IP pool of say 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254, you pick unique IP addresses from that pool to reserve for each device.

So you could use the same IP addresses they're already assigned and the router will 'reserve' those IP addresses out of its dhcp IP pool for those devices. It all depends on how your router implements it. Some allow you to reserve IP addresses outside the pool on the same subnet, others only allow reservation from the pool. Follow your routers instructions.

Reserved IP Seems to be working,
I used different reservation IP address so I could be certain it was using the new one.
A few questions linger, I don't need to know but I'd like to know... Inquiring minds want to know, forgive me!!

  1. The settings page still shows 2 Interfaces, only one address, Is this normal?
What is the 2nd one, How can I find out?
  2. Since it appears the server IP was changing, swapping between 206 and 217,
It was my understanding this IP changing very rarely happens, why might it do this?
Note: 3 days ago I realized my server had changed to WiFi instead of Ethernet, re-plugged Ethernet wire
It changed it back to Ethernet. But the Connection issue has been going on for months.
  3. If the IP swapped why would some boxes still work and others would fail the connection?
My only explanation is the box(s) that still worked still had the IP that is now the correct one.
  4. I thought it was the job of BonJour to broadcast IP addrs, so a changing IP would not be an issue.
Why did the failing device(s) NOT Automatically get the new IP from BonJour?
Seems that when I stopped/started BonJour only THEN did BonJour broadcast the new IP.
    .
4a. ALL devices got the new IP today automatically!!
At first showed the old then quickly showed the new IP.

Likely ipv6 or your wifi interface, nothing to worry about

Bingo. Disable your wifi on the server.

Because with multiple interfaces connected windows does not behave like a real server os.

Bonjour advertises a service, multiple interfaces on a machine can cause conflicts.

You want to make sure your wifi is disabled, completely turned off.

First, let me thank everyone on this post for their guidance, help, and suggestions, I've learned some things!
Turns out, all this time, it was my FREAKING Ethernet wire connection(I think) !!!.LOL
By chance I included a few things that were the keys.
"What is this" chDVRuser pointed the mismatch IP addrs.
"Note: 3 days ago I realized my server had changed to WiFi instead of Ethernet"
I did not know that WiFi and Ethernet connections had different IP addresses, Thanks slampman
Here's the real culprit I think:
My laptop is connected to a TV/monitor.
Every night I grab the TV remote and turn it off for the night, and slide Remote back in next to the laptop.
Every morning I grab the remote and turn TV/monitor back on and slide remote back in next to the laptop.
As I looked at that a short while ago I see that when I slide in the remote it jiggles the Ethernet wire!!!!
The Ethernet wire connects to a Ethernet to laptop C-connector dongle (Laptop does not have Ethernet port).
I suspect that laptop C-connector port is not as secure as an actual Ethernet port which "snaps" in (or I never pushed it in properly) and that jiggle resulted in:
Some days laptop was connected via Ethernet, other days via WiFi, hence the unexplainable changing IP
and losing connection etc, and my wife yelling at me to come fix this freaking TV. :joy: :joy:
Good Grief!!
Now I am not absolutely sure that this C-Connector is so poor that somedays it can be connected enough, and some days not... But I think that's it.
I have disabled WiFi on laptop.
I will also reserve the HDHR IP addrs.
Thanks again to all.

Note to EVERYBODY in this Community, learn from my mistakes.

  1. Set your server to NEVER sleep, I learned the hard way when I first started using CDVR
  2. Reserve your DHCP server connections so they never change.
  3. Turn WiFi OFF on your server if it is connected via Ethernet.

One final question.
Lets say the C-connector dongle or Laptop port is the problem, so no Connection for the Clients.
Fix:
I would unplug the C-connector from the server, no more Ethernet connection... OR Ethernet IP addrs.
I would Re-enable WiFi on the server machine. This leaves the WiFi IP address as the only one.
I would have to go to DHCP reservations and change the IP to the WiFi IP.??
Make sure all Clients properly connect to the WiFi IP.
Anything else??
.
This should be solid as a rock, no dependency on the Dongle adapter, C-Connector.

I don't think anybody that knows about networking would suggest doing that.
You're only going to create more problems by putting your server on WiFi.
Best to quit wiggling the USB connector for your network adapter, or move the DVR to a dedicated device (like a small form factor PC or a NAS).

Unless you miss your wife yelling at you that is.

Thanks everybody.

:slightly_smiling_face:
If I had known more when I started down the CDVR path I would have gotten a small form factor PC.
Seems like a good idea.
I'm not going to start from scratch, I think I see where I am now.
