Sudden glitchy live streaming

I’m not sure if I’m posting this in the right forum as I don’t know what the cause is. I’ve been running Channels DVR for about a year and on my AppleTV we’ve never had a single problem.

However, recently I changed our ISP and now have a different WiFi Mesh setup using the routers and nodes they supplied. Overall the WiFi coverage has been far better than the old router. Absolutely nothing else has changed, even the nodes are in the same place as before. I migrated all the network settings from the old router to the new one so everything has the same IP addresses, WiFi ID and password etc. It’s also worth noting that the Channels DVR server and the HDHomerun box are in the room with the strongest Wi-Fi signal (I have the HDHomerun box connected via CAT5 to a Wi-Fi access point).

Ever since we started using the new routers we keep experiencing episodes that only last 10 seconds or so where the streaming of live TV suddenly drops and we get a message saying network problems are causing problems with the tuner. This happens 2-3 times a day. Also a couple of channels that were previously available are no longer. They appear in the channel list but when we try to watch them, nothing loads and eventually we get the network issues message.

When we get these issues, nothing else appears to be affected. If I look at the router logs I can’t see anything to suggest an internet issue or a WiFi issue. However the issues are often so short that they are other before I can really check other devices.

I don’t know how to identify whether this is a HDHomerun issue, a Channels DVR server issue, a WiFi/Router issue or an incoming Internet issue. Anyone have an idea what the issue might be or how to identify where the problem is?

Is "network problems are causing problems" the exact wording you are getting? Besides your WiFi and ethernet network. You also have a TV network. I forget the exact wording when there are receptions problems for you HDHomeRun. As just replaced your mes routers this seems like a possible cause. We need a bit more information to help:

  • What dose Channels DVR run on?
  • How is this computer or NAS connected to your network?
  • Is your HD Homerun connected to the same mesh device?

While your Channels DVR can connect via WiFi, it's best to be wired. Also, some people find that having both the Channels DVR and the HD Homerun wired to the same node best. Also all network gear is not created equal. If you have both the HDHomerun and the Channels DVR connected to the same node and you are having these issues, getting an inexpensive ethernet switch has helped some people with odd network problems. You connect the switch via ethernet to the mesh node and then both Channels DVR and the HDHomerun to the switch. The NETGEAR 5-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged Network Switch (GS305) is an example of a switch that should work. Try this last after the other things I suggested. Also, try swapping cables and make shore there all full inserted.
