Supported Operating Systems

What OS’s will the DVR backend support? I’m partial to linux as I’ve been running a mythtv backend for the last 10+ years.

1 vote for Mac OS. I don’t mind a background service that runs at startup with no Mac UI (like MythWeb).

Another vote for OS X

I hope we dont need a computer/OS. Its ok if thats an option but one thing that I loved about SD’s solution was that it was just a simple “WD My Cloud” app. It runs on the network connected drive. If you have to buy the apple tv, buy the storage and then build a computer just for this product, I dont see how this takes off.

Another vote for MacOs. I would like a Native UI for set up though.

I think ease of use is paramount as the other solutions (Myth and HDHR) are very technical.

My vote goes to WD MyCloud. There are a variety of reasons for this:

  • I don’t want to keep my computer on 24/7
  • I don’t have my computer on wired network, but my WD MyCloud lives inside the low-voltage closet right next to HDHomeRun
  • I don’t want to store the recordings on the computer. I have an SSD and am lacking the space, and I like my system pretty vanilla and not need to worry about additional settings (e.g. to keep the recordings from being pushed into the TimeMachine backup)

As I don’t want a 24/7 computer running, my vote is for a simple NAS, WD My Cloud for the server.

Additionally, my ideal scenario includes iOS for setup and review of recordings. Of course, a full iOS client would even be better.

At a minimum, a tablet/phone client for setup/review. In order of preference: iOS, Android, Windows10.

Synology will be an absolute must within this demographic.

My vote is for a NAS. I have both the WDMyCloud and Synology so could be a beta tester for either one. My main desktop is a Mac Mini so I could also test on it but would not want to use it as my main DVR. I like the idea of being able to have multiple “stand alone” DVR’s as an option but not a big deal. I have ZERO interest in Windows.

My vote is an app on Seagates Personal Cloud NAS

I agree that NAS support (Synology in my case) would be nice. The only downside is that heavy CPU features such as transcoding would have to be disabled for the typical consumer NAS. I’m guessing this would be ok for many users.

I also vote for Mac support. I’m guessing many Apple TV buyers are deep into the Apple ecosystem and own a Mac over a PC.

100% need Windows support.

NAS - the only interesting solution for me.

The majority of Channels users are Apple households, so our initial DVR prototype is a background Mac OSX service that is designed to run on an always-on mac.

We plan to support Linux as well, in the form of a Docker image which can be installed on any linux machine and most NAS (QNAP, Synology and WD My Cloud all support Docker containers). If you’re using a NAS not mentioned here, let us know (hadn’t heard of Seagate Personal Cloud before, so we’ll look into that one as well).

Windows support is a possibility, but a native windows app is much lower priority. However, there are several ways to run a Docker container on windows already, and the upcoming Windows 10 release will also allow users to run Ubuntu directly inside of Windows.

I’ve been running the SD DVR on a linux based Lacie 5big pro…bought it from Apple.

I vote for Mac Osx also, and synology is a good idea!

I vote for Mac OS X. Not running any NAS

+1 for that. Running from a NAS is definitely preferred.

My vote is for a NAS. I have both the WDMyCloud and Synology.

Synology NAS is a must, #1.
