Synology and Version 1.0.5

Well, I obviously messed up.

Had Synology Package 1.0.4 installed. Had some "interrupted recordings" last week. SO I went out, downloaded the 1.0.5 package. Installed it on my Synology DS918+....

And now I can't enable the DVR service because I don't have "Write Permissions". Any ideas/help?

Some of my recordings are accessible through the file explorer...but nothing works through the DVR service.

What is the exact error message?

Can you click Help > Submit Diagnostics

It won't let me connect to the old recordings folder... even though I can use the "File Station" when logged into my Synology to see the old Channels TV folder, and all it's subfolders... When I try to access those through the ChannelsDVR app, I get "Error: no write permissions on dvr directory"... during initial setup.

Instead, I created a new "DVR" folder at the root of Volume 1 on my Synology. However, I can't find that folder when trying to locate it through the Synology File Station app. So if the ChannelsDVR created a new folder, I have no idea where it is.

Maybe you can right click the Channels TV share in filestation and set the permissions to allow writes?

If you want to pick a new folder you first need to create it in the Synology interface as a new share before telling channels to use it. Otherwise it creates a directory that's no visible unless you use SFTP

Well, I tried to give it permissions to my old folder...but that didn't seem to work. So, I need to start from scratch then?

I would recommend fixing the permissions problem if possible vs starting over. Also run a health check because it's possible your drives are failing. Did you try rebooting the NAS?

I rebooted - no change. Never had to set any permissions with the first package install. No idea what the permission problem is, as the folder I'm trying to point Channels to is Read/Write for Everyone.

Very strange.

What I would recommend:

  • go create a new share in disk station called ChannelsDVR
  • in the DVR uncheck the checkbox then change the path below to use the new ChannelsDVR share
  • copy over all the files from the old share into the new share

Will do. Do you know how to delete folders that are "hidden" on a Synology NAS?

you have to use SFTP client

I'll do some googling....

I've moved the recordings to the correct file in the "new" channels folder. How can I get the app to refresh and show those recordings?

You have to do a backup after the install, by visiting http://x.x.x.x:8089/restore

I assumed you had done that already.. if not, uncheck the checkbox and visit the /restore UI then pick Database folder that you copied over to restore.

Well, I have the media files, but not the database backups... so.... any way to repopulate the "recordings" to show those media files, or should I run them through a different player?

The media files and backups are stored in the same folder. Database vs TV

Ya, I can't find the database backup... just have the media files themselves. No way to rebuild the database from there eh?

Unfortunately not. How did the database disappear though? Honestly this is seeming a lot like filesystem corruption and your disks might be able to fail.

My fault on the missing database - there were multiple databases - when I did the reinstall, I didn't copy the database file separately as I did with the media files... so it got deleted when I started over. Totally my fault... And something I've now learned more from...which is:

On a Synology - build a "Shared Folder" before installing Channels DVR - that way it's not a "hidden" filesystem in the Linux shell that you can only get to using SSH.
