Synology DVR Server slow

I did a little trial today and moved my entire DVR directory over to an External USB3 drive that is connected to my 2018 Mac mini. I did this because here lately I've noticed that my TVE channels are tuning ridiculously slow. I've also noticed that my image icons for shows would lag and take 10-15 seconds to load when I would goto the On Now tab.

Switched everything over, connected an ATV4 to test. Everything is instant now.

I'm trying to understand why my Synology would be hurting so bad to tune everything? I don't have a lot of things running on it. CPU load is under 10%, memory is around 28% and about 30% disk space used.

I have 3 14TB WD Easystore drives (shucked) in SHR1. SSD Cache (which I know may not be doing much benefit but can't hurt). I felt like the Synology 1019+ used to run Channels just fine. I don't get what's going on now. Anyone have any thoughts for me to try?

The only thing that I can think of is that the 14TB drives are just too slow to use for the DVR.

Did you try defragmentation on you Synology drives. Somebody had told me that the SSD Cache was more of a problem so I never bought them so maybe you can try removing and see what happens. Something about getting that Cache corrupt I don't know that the only reason I did not get them and the way mine runs I don't need it on the DS720+ (Just a thought).

I have not tried defragmenting but am doing that now....it has only been running for 10 minutes and I'm in shock

It sped up the loading of the icons but starting a transcode stream is still really slow.

Does the Streaming folder ever clean up? It’s currently at 73GB.

To give an example it just took 30 seconds to load a TVE stream. When I switched my DVR over to my Mac mini the TVE stream started instantly.

Mine it's at 6GB channels start instant no issues.

That does seem abnormally large. I would recommend submitting diagnostics from the server if you haven’t already so the Devs can take a look maybe.

I made a new volume dedicated just to the DVR using my old 8TB drives...it sped up by about 10 seconds but its still taking 20 seconds to start a TVE stream

I've seen it take over a minute sometimes to start a TVE stream if it has to re-authenticate with my provider Xfinity. You can check the DVR log after starting to stream a TVE channel and see whether it had to re-authenticate.

Just tuned to DIY which I haven't watched or recorded from in quite awhile and it took a minute and 18 seconds to tune.

check the load averages. These can be high (over 4) if your io wait is high... even when cam and ram are low.

I failed to yield my own advice....if all else fails, reboot.

A reboot fixed it.
