I just noticed that I am running an older version of the 1.0.2Beta on my Synology NAS array. What is the recommended procedure for updating to the 1.0.4 version without losing my recordings or settings?
There is no reason to upgrade. The DVR software keeps itself up-to-date regardless of the synology package version.
