Takes multiple times pressing channel for signal to load

Hiya,
I’m using the latest beta build 8.2.2331 and have an issue where when selecting a channel, it will sometimes not load and all I get is a black screen. I then need to exit to the channel selection screen and press the chosen channel again. This might happen 2-3 times before the chosen channel will load.

Huh that’s strange. Is it happening consistently, and across all channels? I assume the App Store version is still working fine?

Can you try with the latest beta? If you end up on a black screen again, does it show the spinner in the timeline?

Hiya, just tried the new beta. I can confirm the new spinner in timeline shows. I like the new placement of it.

I still get the black screen. What I do note on my end is it seems to be when changing channels that are on different mux listings. So not sure it could actually be a signal strength issue?

So the spinner just keeps spinning forever? That does sound like a signal issue, because it means the connection to the hdhomerun is open but no video packets ever show up.

I checked App Store version and I was able to replicate it once.

No the issue is only on certain channels and is not consistent. So the is leading me to think it is related to signal strength when channels are on different mux frequencies??

Yeah spinner keeps spinning. I’ll try adjusting the signal and see what does.

Yea sounds like something fishy going on, esp if its happening on the old version too.

When you hit the black screen, try visiting the web interface for your HDHomeRun and look at the “Tuner Status” page. Does it say one of the tuners is active? Click on the one that is, and see what the “Streaming Rate” says for that tuner.

You can also look at the status when a channel is working correctly and compare against what it says when its not working.

Finally, try the free InstaTV Pro or VLC apps from the app store to see if they run into the same problem.

Ok just tried what you suggested and when changing channels the signal will work fine (channel change) I note on the status page that only one tuner shows a locked signal. I.e: the frequency in MHz. However, when I get the black screen, I note that it seems both tuners have a frequency. (MHz) I think what could be happening is as the channels that get stuck are on different mux signals the tuners both become active and get confused?

P.s not being able to replicate the issue on instatv. I note when changing channels it stays on the same tuner in the hdhomerun status screen. I was refreshing the hdhomerun page to double check this.

You can click the “Tuner 0” and “Tuner 1” links to get more details about what the tuner is doing. When the app is using it, you’ll see a streaming rate and the ip of the ATV.

Channels should always prefer Tuner 1, even when changing channels. Surprised to hear both tuners are in use… I would click through to try to see what ip is using them.

sorry for delay in getting back.
What I can see is the the streaming rate drops from around 10.275mbs to 0.453mbps. ip stays locked to the same ip address on the status of the tuner 1 when the screen goes black vs when the tv signal works.

below is the signal strength and quality when the channel screen goes black
signal strength is 100%
signal quality 96%
symbol quality is 100%

p.s I cant get it to replicate using tuner 0 again

@michaelg reported a similar issue. I think I know what’s causing it (related to dvb EPG parsing). I will try to fix it on the beta this week.

Please try the latest beta and see if the problem is fixed.

Hiya, I have tested the new beta and can confirm the issue is still present but happens less often than before. I.e: I have to change channels about 5 or more times in succession. I’m not watching the channel for more than a few seconds. Just trying to replicate the issue. However, I did unitstall the beta and reinstall the new beta. So if it’s guide data related it may stil be happening as the guide data could still be refreshing in back ground. I’ll try again in an hour to see if it happens again.

P.s top shelf has not loaded yet and I tried the submit log feature when the screen blacked out. Not sure if you the logs?

No still happening on the new build but what I note is it seems to happen 90% of time now when changing a channel whilst watching Live tv and choosing a new channel to watch from the drop down favourites guide.

So it’s happening more often than before now?

No that often anymore. But when it does seems to happen it happens when selecting a channel from the drob down TV guide. In the past it would happen when selecting a channel from favourites / all channels also screens also.

How do I know if you have received to logs submitted?

Just sent through a few using latest beta version.
