Previously, I was port forwarding 8089 and accessed Channels away from home using the "Away from Home" option. I wanted to try Tailscale so I can close that open port so I removed the 8089 port forward from my router, turned on Tailscale on the DVR but have not changed anything on my iPhone yet.
I went to connect to channels (remotely) expecting it to fail, chose connect, away from home and was directed to an Authorize page. I authorized the connection and it loaded. How is this possible if if I removed the 8089 port forward? Is this using Tailscale already even through I never did anything on the iPhone with regaurds to Tailscale. I am not complaining LOL I just want to make sure I closed the open port (8089) on my router. How can I tell where my phone is connecting to channels from.
Thanks!
You need tailscale on the Iphone to connect. If you do not have tailscale on your IPhone you are not using tailscale.
Yeah, I know. My question was how am I able to connect with out tailscale on my phone and port 8089 closed on my router. I feel like I should not be able to but I can.
Maybe your Router needs a reboot ?
That could make sense. I just wanted to verify the port is actually closed and was surprised I could still get in.
Ok, sorry, yeah! I checked here Open Port Check Tool - Test Port Forwarding on Your Router and 8089 is still showing open so I may need to reboot my router. Sorry for the post but thanks!
do you have Remote DVR sent to auto? If so, that would be opening the port on your router for you automatically.
If you want to maintain the port forwarding manually, set it to manual, and open the port on your router yourself.
If you’re just using a VPN and not the port at all, you can just turn Remote DVR off.
I did have it set to auto but that is now saying it’s failing to set the port (which is good). I believe a reboot of the router will work. Just have to wait for the family to stop using it for the night
FYI in the app under settings if you see letters and numbers you’re attached via normal remote 8089. If you are attached with Tailscale it will show your dvr’s Tailscale ip 100.ect.
Yes! Thanks for the info. I will remember that now
