What is the optimal transcode setting on the Extend for the Apple TV. DVR option.
Young64, optimal can mean different things depending on configuration and use cases so I’ll go through my setting and why I use it.
In my case I view DVR shows primarily on televisions and am interested in keeping high video quality. So I use the top transcode option (fairly sure it is heavy) which uses the extend to transcode the OTA feed from MPEG2 to H264 while maintaining the original video resolution. The result is that the DVR files take up about 1/2 the disk space without a significant decrease in video quality. The other options reduce file sizes further by reducing resolution and increasing compression at the expense of video quality. IMO these other transcode options are more appropriate for the small screens of a phone or tablet.

I use “Heavy” for content that I record, and that is the setting for I have set for default on each of my HDHR Extends. For when I am connected remotely I try to use “Mobile” and if the internet connection doesn’t hold that up I will step it down.
There is now a transcoder setting on the web UI Settings page for the DVR, under your EXTEND. Recordings will be made using this format.
