Transcoding question (remote access)

Is transcoding necessary in the following case and should it not be done on the remote Apple TV or perhaps is it because the interlaced bandwidth would be too high.

hd homerun OTA Broadcast >Channels DVR (Mac mini) >Transcoding>remote Apple TV

I can see the following: Watching ch24 from IP (hidden) (Transcoder Running at 8mbps: 4m17s @ 1.00x (49.98fps)): strength=99% quality=100% symbol=100% rate=3.9Mb/sec

Transcoding is not required at home. You should make sure your client is set to Home Streaming Quality: Original

No this is for a remote Apple TV (away from home streaming)

I'm not sure what you're asking.

Transcoding depends on the source video format and bitrate. Is your OTA mpeg2 or h264?

The transcoding yes/no is decided by being out of home, not the client. It's done on the DVR to preserve internet bandwidth from the DVR to the source.

It looks like he's saying since the source bitrate is 3.9Mbps, and his transcoder is set to 8Mbps, why is it transcoding, should just be remuxing?
