Transcoding when Local

Lately my Channels DVR clients in my home buffer frequently. A restart on the Synology NAS typically fixes it. I've never experienced this issue over the 3+ years using Channels.

One thing I've noticed is that when I watch a channel at home (local) I see the channel is being transcoded by the NAS and watched by the client. Why is Channels transcoding when I have the playback set to direct and original? This seems new to me.

The image shows two different channels as being viewed right now. One is the home Living Room which is Channel No. 13 and 38.1. The other is a remote user watching Channel No. 2 and 8.1.

Why are the channels being watched and all transcoded? I know my remote user is limited to 5mbps, but the Living Room TV should be original. I'd expect no transcoding.

What am I missing here?

This is one channel I'm watching on a single TV at original quality and direct.

It looks like you’re using a custom m3u to change the channel numbers. Post an example of the text for one of these channels.

Oh, that's interesting. I'm using Playlist Streaming Library Manager.

Here's an example of a channel.

Try this:

#EXTM3U

#EXTINF:-1 tvc-guide-title="CBS Boston WTEST" channel-id="test21510" tvg-id="WTEST" tvg-name="WTEST" tvg-logo="https://res.cloudinary.com/dvt4yo9eq/image/upload/v1760360906/tv-logos/mnvx8mnealmzd0uznb6u.png" tvg-chno="21510" channel-number="21510" tvg-description="No description available..." tvc-guide-description="No description available..." group-title="HD" tvc-guide-stationid="20431" tvc-guide-art="" tvc-guide-tags="" tvc-guide-genres="" tvc-guide-categories="" tvc-guide-placeholders="" tvc-stream-vcodec="" tvc-stream-acodec="",CBS Boston WTEST

Or format=ts instead of format=MPEG-TS. I can’t remember.

Since I don't manually enter the values in the M3U, it's hard to edit. It's automatically generated from Playlist..I wonder if there's something I'm doing in there.

I edited the above m3u. As long as you currently do not have any other channel currently on 21510 Just create a new m3u custom channel in the dvr sources. Copy and paste it in and then tune to 21510 and see if it transcodes. If it doesn’t you know it’s PLM issue.

Your latest screenshot further points to an hls vs mpeg ts m3u issue. Notice your TVE channels merely remux because they are native hls streams. Your hdhr channels are mpeg ts and are transcoding. When ts is used channels uses this info and doesn’t transcode.

I'm pretty sure you meant this, which gives an mpeg-ts stream

There's documentation on this:

Another tip, if you're going between local devices, you should be using mpeg-ts transport, not HLS.

format=ts
