TrueNas installation

Hello! I'm trying to switch from a Windows PC to TrueNAS Scale. I installed Channels using Truecharts and created an SMB share, however I can't figure out how to Channels to see the share. Plex has no issue accessing it. I still have a lot to learn about TrueNAS so any help would be appreciated.

Are you referring to a specific post? I read other questions before posting.

I was punting since I didn't understand this part.

And I'm unfamiliar with Truecharts

I have not moved from TrueNAS Core to TrueNAS Scale due to the lack of clear instructions. Based on my experience with Core, and the reading I've done about Scale, I'll pose these questions:

  • Have you tried mapping (linking) the media folder as one dose with Plex?
  • If you want to connect as an SMB share, you may need to create a network bridge as Scale does not permit direct access via the primary NIC. Did you create a network bridge and then have cDVR server attach to that bridge? Alternatively if your NAS has two network adapters you could use the second NIC for cDVR.

Please let us know how this goes

If you don't have a pressing need to change, I would recommend against it. Core is FreeBSD, and Scale is Linux. Why transition to a completely different OS if you don't need to?

This is why I've been sitting tight. I have one pending issue with Core and that is I run a Windows 10 VM and I want to be ready to the EOL of windows 10 by moving the VM to Windows 11. To date, neither Scale or Core passes the TPM to the VM. I suspect we will only see this on Scale. My alternate option is run Proxmox and TrueNAS on top of it and this is less desirable to me.

I needed a new NAS and wanted to try something new. I played around with Proxmox, Unraid and TrueNAS. So far TrueNAS has been really solid, outside of figuring out Channels.

I went through the same evaluation process about a year ago, and chose Proxmox.

Amazingly, with PCIe passthrough, I was able to take my existing Windows NVMe boot drive, and create a Windows VM using it. No changes to it required -- and even my 4x20TB Stablebit DrivePool works the same as ever.

So, without having to mess around migrating Channels, Plex and numerous other packages -- I've been able to virtualize everything. Being able to continue to use DrivePool and Veeam for duplication and backup -- which I know and trust, has been fantastic.

There hasn't really been much of a learning curve, probably because I already knew Debian. Understanding how to use Docker in a Proxmox LXC container took a minute, but that's about it.

If you get bogged down with TrueNAS, I'd absolutely recommend taking another look at Proxmox.
