Tuner Not Found

I’m running a HDHR Quattro. Nothing has changed but yesterday in disappeared from the channels app. I’ve tried swapping cables ports etc but nothing seems to work.

I have Google WiFi connected to my modem and the HDHR connected to a switch with all my other devices from the Google WiFi main hub. Attaching it directly to the modem does not seem to make a difference. Any ideas?

Does it show on my.hdhomerun.com ?

What is the IP of your HDHR and the IP of your Apple TV?

It is saying that it is not connected.

I've bypassed the switch that it was plugged into and the HDHomeRun app has found it. Looks like there is a firmware update so I will run that and see if I can go back to using the switch again.

OK so I've updated the firmware. Tried to plug back into the switch and it does not work. I get red flashing lights then green flashing lights on rear of HDHR. If I plug direct to Google WiFi it works but via the switch it does not. Other devices are using that switch fine. Other devices work fine with that cable. I have tried numerous ports. Seems weird that it would just decide not to like my switch overnight!

If its flashing that's a hardware issue. You'd need to reach out to [email protected]

Sounds like its not getting a DHCP address when connected to that switch for some reason.

OK. Will drop them a line.

OK. So I heard back from the people at HDHomeRun and they have confirmed that it sounds like I have a hardware issue. My HD HomeRun Quattro is 13 months old and the warranty is for 12 months. Surprise surprise! They have offered a 30% discount at inflated prices allowing me to replace the tuner for the same price that I can get it on Amazon as a new customer anyway. I'm not particularly happy as you can imagine. I'm not sure what I am going to do going forward. I really do not want to give Silicondust any more money for a device that is clearly built to last just past the warranty. I also have put in substantial investment in my aerial, NAS and app setup to jump to something else.

Perhaps you just got unlucky, as I’ve found their hardware to be very stable over the years.

I’ve owned two of probably the original models (gray with two connectors on back), the one that writes to mp4 format, a quad tuner, and a prime, though I’m only using the prime now.

So, don’t give up on them after a single failure. While you may be upset that it failed, I think its still the best way on the market to record TV, when paired with competent software like Channels.

Quite strange that it still works when plugged in a certain way... almost sounds like a software/firmware issue.

I've had a lot of weird networking issues with my PRIME over the years, but that model uses a custom OS and custom TCP/IP stack. The QUATRO shouldn't have the same types of bugs.

So I've ordered a new one from SiliconDust. Whilst I am not happy with the hardware failing after 14 months I'm going to chalk it down to being unlucky. Channels' UI and implementation is so unbelievable good that I cannot move anywhere else. The support here too is top notch too.

If that was true you'd hear/see a lot more complaints like yours. Ours, for example, is now two years and two months in service and still going strong. Don't blame you for being miffed. I would be, as well. But I don't think it's due to designed-to-fail-just-past-warranty. Just bad luck :frowning:

Agreed. Also, we've seen this kind of behaviour end up being the fault of the network switch in the past.

I'm curious: What brand and model of network switch?

I've been running 3 Primes for years—started with 1 3 years ago, and then added 2 more a year later, one of which was a refurbished unit. In all this time I've never had a problem with the devices themselves.

That's not to say there haven't been problems. I've replaced the CableCARDs at least once, and the tuning adapters a couple of times. Also, I was affected by the Prime ethernet firmware bug from a couple years ago that forced me to keep my Primes on a link local–only 169.254.0.0/16 network. (That encounter revealed how hit-or-miss SD's support is, having support emails ignored for months at a time with no communication.)

So, while SD's software leaves MUCH to be desired, their support is lackluster, and their forum moderators can act like totalitarian dictators when discussing complaints or competition, their hardware is usually—almost always—rock solid. It's also unfortunate that they are pretty much the only game in town for network–connected tuners.

So I received a new Quattro today and also bought a new Netgear switch just to be safe and I am encountering exactly the same issue. The Quattro connects fine it I connect it to the modem on its own but I get flashing red when connected to the switch. Any ideas?

I'm not sure what the red flash means- did HDHR support tell you if that indicates a link issue or dhcp issue?

Sounds like the QUATRO is fine and its something weird with your router and/or network. Maybe there's a spanning loop? That can happen if multiple wires are going between the same two devices.

Whats weird is that everything was working fine and then I couldn't find the tuner one day. I hadn't changed anything, hadn't altered any settings, wires or devices so I'm totally perplexed. I've tried both switches with just the cable from the modem and one to the Quattro and I get the same issue. I would have expected a spanning loop problem to disappear given that simplified setup.

Post this problem in the Silicondust forum along with your DEVICEID and they will look into it.

I will try that too. Thanks Edwin.
