When I activate the Remote DVR using the automatic function it activates no problem and shows an IP address and port. I can connect remotely using my phone with WiFi turned off but when I go to client like a firestick on my home network it either can't find the server or gives me an error message. If I turn off Remote DVR everything goes back to normal locally.
Strange. What kind of router/wifi are you using?
Arris SBG8300
If you have another router, I would recommend setting the Arris into bridge mode and connecting your other router to it so you can use that other router instead. https://arris.secure.force.com/consumers/articles/General_FAQs/SBG8300-Bridge-Mode-Setup/
There are manual port forward setting available on the Arris, but I alwats put my Cable ISP gateways/cable modems into bridge mode and use my own router instead so I can choose the router I use and have more control.
Not much interested in adding another router and not sure what difference that would make anyway. I will try the manual port forward. In the end the Remote does work and honestly as long as the server continues to record while we are gone the wonky behavior locally is irrelevant. Remote gets turned off anyway while we are home.
You can always use the tailscale option for remote viewing.
Manual configuration did the trick. Actually the SBG was very intuitive. Tested with a firestick through a cellular hotspot and it worked flawlessly with nothing hinky going on locally. As a point of reference the automatic setup would choke with the previous Netgear router.
