TVE 403 Errors: How to resolve

Aloha. Receiving 403 errors with local Fox (KHON) and ABC (KITV), especially when wanting to view something live like NBA/MLB playoffs. Would an HD HomeRun box solve this? Folks tend to talk in code on these sites, but I haven't found an explicit "YES."

• AppleTV 4K
• Channels DVR
• Spectrum Cable subscription
(We declined the cable box)

Are you trying to go OTA or cable card with an HDHR? if you want to try OTA you could visit tvfool.com to see what you could bring in as far as signal and what kind of antenna is needed etc.

I can't speak to the 403 errors but I do know you can never go wrong with OTA

403 is "Access Forbidden". It can have a few meanings in this context, some of which are:

  1. Your authorization cookie has expired
  2. Their server is having issues and you are being directed to a non-public spot
  3. Based upon your authorization/location, you are not authorized for that particular stream at the moment

For 1, try manually rescanning in the DVR web UI. For 2, all you can do is keep trying or wait, because that's a "them" problem, not a "you" problem. And for 3, you can't do anything about it either; if it is 3—and occurring during live sports—I would hazard a guess that you might be in an area with a blackout.

(These are my ideas based upon what you have reported. I may be incorrect, but without more details, I cannot say.)

Based upon the error message, this seems like the OP is receiving the locals via TVE.

Yeah but he asked if switching to an HDHR would solve it. That's what I was responding to.

Apologies; I skipped that part in my first read.

In short, yes. For your locals, they will work without problems. For other cable channels, whether or not you can receive them will depend upon your region and whether Spectrum flags the channels with DRM. Some markets have nearly every non-local channel flagged, and others vary between just some or nearly all.

Also, if you can receive the your locals OTA, an ATSC HDHR tuner would be a good option, too.

Thanks for the great breakdown of the error. Regional blackouts are moot for nationally broadcast events like the World Series. But we could assume that Spectrum would block the broadcast and/or ability to record with TVE.

No, the block would come from the network. Spectrum is only used to authenticate whether you can access the stream based upon your cable subscription.

The streams themselves—and therefore any blocks—would come from the network websites themselves; Spectrum is not part of that equation. (Unless of course it was the first example I gave.)
