Has anyone else noticed that some TVE channels are actually playing commercials vs going to a long break. Has something changed?
I've always seen commercials
For example?
The following channels will have periods of quiet depending on yoru location on TVE.
OWN, all the discovery channels.
AMC, BBC America plus IFC (Rather annoying)
ABC 7 Los Angeles replaces ads
The sporting channels are pretty good except for those periods of music etc.
thankfully, we have the different options for getting channels from the apps themselves.
Your situation will vary.
Yes, I have noticed. These commercials are in addition to the long break and are delaying the actual program being streamed.
There is actually another thread on this - Channels LIVE is behind 1 hour on only 1 channel
I've notice the same thing. Recording OTA programing is fine, but anything Channels records from TVE now has 'additional' commercials in the recording, so when you get to the end of the recording, you miss the end of the show. We record a lot from HGTV, the Magnolia Network, Fox News and Fox Business. For the last day, including today, I've noticed that the Channels recording now has both 'actual commercials', plus, the commercial break notice we usually had.
This morning, I recorded from Fox News, the three hours of 'Fox and Friends' (we only watch the last hour, because there is no way to schedule just the last hour to record), and the two hours of 'America's Newsroom'.
When we went to watch the third hour of 'Fox and Friends', it stared 3/4 of the way through the 2nd hour of the show with both some 'actual commercials', and the normal 'commercial break' notices. Normally, Fox News has about a 4 minute break between segments, but now, when playing the recording, there is 4-5 minutes of actual commercials, followed by the normal 4 minute break, making the commercial length now about 9 - 10 minutes between show segments.
As a test, I scheduled 'The Falkner Focus' to record. I watched the show live while it recorded, and it had the normal 'commercial notice' between segments, but once the show ended, I watched the recording and it contained both the 'actual commercial', and the normal 'commercial notice' in the recording. In addition, when I fast forwarded to the end of the recording, it ended and didn't have about the last 10-15 minutes of the show.
The same thing happened to the TVE recordings I made last night. I recorded 'Fixer to Fabulous' and the new show, 'Betting on Paradise'. Both shows had the added 'actual commercials, and 'commercial break notice', and playback for both recordings ended about 10-15 minutes before the show ended, so I had to go out to the HGTV site to watch the endings.
I'm running a test now. I've turned off 'commercial detection' in Channels settings, and I'm recording another TVE show to see what happens.
For the record, this morning after I noticed what was happening I updated the Channels version to '2025.01.07.2013'. My sources are: Philo for non-news programing, and Spectrum for the news channels. I also stopped and restarted the Channels app on my QNAP NAS where the Channels app runs and records to.
After rebooting server last night, it was back on schedule. However, today it's off by 40 + minutes again on Fox News.
So, what has changed? Was there a Channels DVR change or is this something to do with TVE?
Thanks for your reply. I'm seeing the same, but just recently.
I just turned OFF recording on Fox News Outnumbered. As soon as I turned it OFF and went back in, the time is now same as actual time.
To me that makes it obvious it's a Channels DVR issue.
Let's get it fixed!
If you truly only want the last hour, change your pass to have a negative start padding of 120 minutes.
I was thinking the same.
...and pad the end of important recordings from Passes on any affected TVE channels for, say, 30-45 minutes after too, so they don't get cut off in the meantime?
Where are you getting Channels version '2025.01.07.2013? There is no mention of it under release history. The last one mentioned in 12/24
Do you see the extended commercials on the live websites?
I'm seeing them on the Magnolia channel https://go.discovery.com/channel/magnolia-network-preview-atve-us
Thanks. The one place I didn't look.
It is a Channels recording issue which just started yesterday. When I watch a Fox News, Fox Business, of HGTV show live while it is being recorded, then 'commercial breaks' pop up for 4-5 minutes, then the program resumes. Watching it live, everything is fine and the show ends on time.
When I watch the recording of what I just watched live, for some reason, Channels is inserting some 'actual commercials' which didn't appear when I watched the show live, to the recording, plus the normal 'commercial break' notice that appeared in the live version. Because of the additional 'added' commercials (adds 4-5 extra minutes to each commercial segment), playback of the recording ends 10-15 minutes early so you miss the end of the show because the 'Pass' was scheduled to record from 11:00am to 12:00pm.
I disabled 'Commercial Detection' in the Channels settings and recorded a Fox News show that I watched live, and Channels recording still added the additional 'commercials'.
Someone for Channels support needs to check this out, because it is only doing this to recordings where the content comes from TVE. OTA recordings work fine.
Channels does not insert commercials. They are inserted by the website/network.
(Just because it is only occurring on recordings does not necessarily mean the problem is Channels. Channels only records what it is given; the error is that the network is adding extra "commercials" in the feed.)
And while I'm watching it on the website during a commercial, I duplicate the browser tab and watch in the other tab and it's back to the show there, while the original tab is playing ads.
Definitely an issue with the website feeds.
I don't think 'Channels' is actually inserting the commercials, but they are recording more from the TVE source, than what the TVE source is presenting to Channels when the viewer watches the show 'live'. Somehow, the Channels recording process is picking up 'commercial' content that isn't shown when watching what is being recorded, live.
Has anyone from Channels done a compare by recording a program from TVE, while at the same time, watch it live, then go back and watch the recording to see what is happening? This just started in the last day.
