TVos 11.3 beta builds

Just wanted to see if anyone else who has updated to 11.3 beta builds has any issues with Channels app?

I started having issues (picture freezing every few minutes making it almost unwatchable) a few days ago and after extensive testing the only cause I can see is the beta builds.

I have another ATV not on beta builds and that still works perfectly and all other devices (fire tv, Android tv) work without issues so it’s definately not an issue with my network or tuners.

I have not seen any issues so far, but may have a different config.

  • ATV4K - tvOS 11.3b4, wired GB Ethernet
  • HDHR Extend - No transcoding
  • All my ATV/HDHR are wired to a separate unmanaged Ethernet switch from my WLAN router.

I’m on a similar set up to you except I use a Connect and a Connect Quattro (in the UK).

I’m kind of hoping it’s related to the beta builds otherwise I’m at a complete loss as to what the problem could be…

ATV on tvOS 11.2.6 runs Channels app flawlessly regardless of whether wired to unmanaged gigabit switch or on wifi. This confirms network and both connects have no issues.

ATV on tvOS 11.3b4 - Channels is pretty much unusable regardless of whether wired to switch (same wires and port as above) or on WiFi (same location as above). Could it be that the beta builds have affected the way Channels can handle the video and/or audio formats in the UK?

Not sure if this helps but same issue with InstaTV. I tried that first on the ATV on the beta builds and as that too has problems it led me to think there was an issue with the Connects but the fact they work perfectly on the other ATV (in both Channels and InstaTV) and all other devices has ruled that out.

Are there any logs I can produc/view in Channels that might help. HDHomeRun logs don’t show anything of note.

iOS/tvOS betas traditionally have so much logging turned on that their performance is rubbish. Channels utilizes almost all of the CPU during playback. This is most likely what’s causing poor playback and the release will work as well as 11.2.x.

We’ve made the suggestion in the past, but I’ll repeat it, if you rely on a Channels for your Primary TV watching, do not install any betas.

Aha that makes perfect sense. Would have found it difficult to describe but it does appear like it’s struggling with the stream, hence initially ruling out network and signal issues.

Thankfully this isn’t my main box so not a major issue in the short term, was just concerned that the new version of tvOS might have broken something that wasn’t ‘fixable’.

Will update once the final release of 11.3 is available.
