Does anyone know if the new Ubiquiti UNAS Pro would be able to support running the Channels DVR software?
Not at this time. They're targeting this NAS as a pure storage device. It has no support for installing 3rd party applications, including (but not limited to) Docker. Strictly a network storage server-- though it has some great features, and if you're invested in the UniFi ecosystem it could be a nice addition to your rack at a reasonable price point.
Thanks for the reply. That is exactly the info I was looking for. I am invested in their ecosystem, but at this point my storage solution and Channels DVR are on the same system. It is currently running Windows 10 and does not (directly) support Windows 11 so I've been looking at alternatives for the future.
At this point, I'm leaning towards either trying to use some of the options to bypass and still upgrade to Windows 11, or try using something like TrueNAS on that existing hardware and reload.
The Ubiquiti was intriguing, but only if I could also run Channels.
I don't recommend running channels on TrueNAS at this time. It's in too much flux and there are many quirks that will cause you issues. Since you have been running Channels on Windows, get yourself an N100 mini PC that comes with Windows 11 pre installed. Belink makes a quality product and has a few offerings. Add USB storage or use a NAS.
That is not strictly true. You can technically install packages from the Debian APT repositories, but they may not necessarily survive an OS upgrade, and would likely need to manually started after a reboot.
However, the hoops needed to jump through make it quite undesirable. (This is similar to the post from a few weeks ago asking about using their Pi image installation of Channels as a Time Machine backup. Yes, you can do what you ask; however, unless you really know what you're doing, you really shouldn't.)
I think it’s safe to say, especially in the context of this forum, community, and with other options available, this NAS is not suitable to install and run software on.
This is strictly designed as network attached storage.
