Upcoming National EAS Test (USA), how will Channels react?

Hi all,

FEMA announced a national test of the Emergency Alert System for September 27 at 2:20pm eastern time. According to Silicondust, it’s supposed to be up to the client streaming from the tuner to handle an incoming EAS message. As an example, Windows Media Center will retune to the designated EAS channel provided by the cable company (if applicable) with the start of the alert. That being said, some cable systems, and all terrestrial broadcast participants, will display the message overtop the regular broadcast instead of requesting a retune.

Personally, I’ve never seen an EAS message come through while using the Channels app on either iOS or Apple TV, but this is likely because I’ve not had one sent out for my area while using Channels. Assuming the EAS message comes through as planned, and the cable system requests a retune, how will Channels handle it, if at all? I don’t use DVR at the moment, but for those that do, will it mess with their recordings?

Thanks!
A

Neither the apps nor the DVR is currently set up to detect EAS messages.
