URL for accessing DVR at home

Is there a generic URL I can bookmark on my computer which sends me to the DVR? Moved recently and it didn't work. It was something like 127.0.0. etc.

I now see it as: http://tonys-imac.local:8089/

If I use the above and somehow change the name of my iMac, I am guessing it won't work.

Thanks.

Tony

Indeed there is: https://my.channelsdvr.net

I tried that before, but didn't work...

I think you have a typo there. Should be http://my.channelsdvr.net. Works for me.

Just tried it. Same thing...

My guess is that unless I have it set to allow remote access, the above URLs won't work. I don't want to go through the hassles of setting up forwarding a port. Anyway, there should be just a URL I can use at home on my laptop (which is different from where the server is).

You have to setup port forwarding on your router.

Not exactly what I am asking. I am at Home (on the same network as my server) and have my laptop which is not the server. Is there no universal URL that allows me to access it?

I don't want to set up port forwarding since it is a hassle with my Cox router.

There is no way to do what you're asking. The DVR is accessible using the name of your computer on port 8089.

A "Universal URL" is only possible with either local network hairpinning or a horizon DNS.

Hairpinning means that your router sees the remote destination (the my.channelsdvr.net IP address) would be the same as your home network's IP address. A horizon DNS means your local (home) network resolves the IP addresses differently, based upon where the request comes from—usually determined by inside versus outside the network.

If your server name is resolvable on your local network then that should work for you too. I think you have that name above. If that’s working for you now I would expect it will always work when you’re home unless you rename your Mac.

Just use the IP address of the computer and use http://IPADDRESS:8089

Do you change your computer name a lot? I'd just deal with it when it happens.

Okay, I was just wondering if there was a universal URL for accessing at home rather than booking a URL with a 4 dot address. No big problem.

No, I just moved. Thought it would get a good thing to have something similar http://my.channelsdvr.net for home usage for those not forwarding the port. I think Channels is great, but if it is to become mainstream, it may need to simplify non-technical issues.

Thanks!

You could always change your hosts.conf file and create your own URL

LocalChannelsDVR.com 192.168.1.5

I'm pretty sure if you change the name of your iMac, you can just disable, then enable Bounjour Discover in the DVR web UI and it should pickup the new computer name.

Thanks everyone. I just went ahead and set up port forwarding.
