Using a https stream as an additional channel to record from

Hi

I would like to record some Quest HD TV programs streamed on discoveryplus.com but don’t know if this is possible

The address discovery+ link accesses Quest live TV (requires user login name and password in browser)

Can I create a virtual channel that uses this link to record from?

I think you need to use a service like PlayOn to get imports of those paid streaming services VOD things. People here use that with Channels DVR https://www.playon.tv/

Agreed, for recording from Discovery+ your best bet is to use the Playon service in conjunction with the Playon Cloud import source built in to ChannelsDVR. I have used it with my Discovery+ and Paramount+ services and I am very happy with the results.

My understanding is that with PlayOnCloud, as the name suggests, your recordings are in the cloud and not on your drive. Unlike with PlayOnHome that saves the recordings on your drive. Another difference is that the Cloud can record in full HD (1080p) compared to Home that is limited to 720p. Correct me if this is not right.

I'm interested and may give it a try.

Once the PlayOnCloud source is imported in Channels DVR, does it just open the corresponding apps to play the recordings or does it happen from within Channels?

PlayOn Cloud records in the cloud and the recordings can then be downloaded locally for playback.

Channels takes what PlayOn Cloud does a step further and automates the download process and then automatically places the recording into your library for viewing. Once this occurs the recording is also then available for you locally to do with as you please.

Actually, those recording are stored in the cloud temporarily, unless you get a Playon Cloud plan with storage included (then they can be stored in the cloud indefinitely). I just use the Playon recording credits. Once Playon finishes the recording you have 7 days to download it to whatever device and player you want. In fact, Playon sends out reminders telling you to download your recordings before they are removed. Fortunately, ChannelsDVR checks for new recordings and downloads every 2 hours. Plenty of time.

I have and use the 7 day storage ($2.99/month) option. However, I recently noticed that this option is no longer offered on their web site. The cheapest plan they are offering to new users seems to be $4.99 which comes with long term cloud storage. I fear that my $2.99 plan is not long for this world.

PlayOn Cloud with credits sounds like one solution but I need to pay for a PlayOn Cloud service and also remember to use PlayOn Cloud to set a schedule to record programs

This is making the scheduling activity process more difficult so not a great solution yet

After looking into it more, I will pass on PlayOn because, even though it is technically not illegal, it does violate most of the terms of service from the streaming services (not allowed to do stream captures).

I would hate to be banned from a streaming service because of this.
