Using channels for locast

Hi. I’m new to this and am excited I seem to have actually found a potential solution for the problem of not being able to record from locast.

I apologise for these queries but reading thru the forum, I am still unsure on a few things.

  1. firstly, to use channels to record from locast, is it absolutely necessary to use HDHomeRun run? Or can alternatives be used. I hear some talk on The use of Playon...but not sure if this works with channels.

  2. can experienced users confirm that the roku app (I know it’s not supported anymore)...still works ? My ultimate goal is to use my roku, with HDHomeRun to record various shows from locast.

  3. with using the roku and hdhomerun, can anyone offer some advice to me as a first time user to all of this. Perhaps dumbed down instructions on setup

  4. is hdhomerun run app needed also , does it run on roku or desktop for this to work.

Appreciate any helpful advice. Many thanks

Channels does not require an HDHomeRun to work. If you wish to use an antenna or cable subscription, then yes you need an HDHomeRun tuner. If you are going to use Locast as your source, though, you do not need a tuner. (You do not need SiliconDust's software, nor PlayOn. Channels can handle all that on its own.)

With regards to Roku: the does still work, but there is no guide, just the On Now screen showing your favorite channels. You do get all of your recordings, too.

To expand on the Roku client a bit more. It’s not being developed any more. So while it may still work today, if it breaks tomorrow it will not be fixed. Use at your own risk.

Ok cheers to both of you for that quick advice. So literally...all I have to do to record locast now is simply subscribe to channels. I have the app on my screen now.

You need the Channels DVR server running on a PC or NAS 24/7 in addition to the client apps. Also, I believe the Locast support depends upon Chromium/Chrome, so a low-powered ARM-based NAS won't work.

Ahh. Ok ..I think I understand...so channels DVR server Runs on the pc and is where the locast recordings are done By the user. then the roku app just shows the recordings...my dumbed Down explanation. Please let me know if I am wrong

To be honest.. I wanted something a bit like Playon (but that does not record from locast). Fitzy tv is ideal for locast...but has no roku app.
Can’t win sometimes :pensive:

Further to the above, can anyone recommend a good affordable nas server. FYI I have an r7000 netgear nighthawk. So if I can connect a USB to that router to act as a media server... That would be ideal for me.

Unless that router is running Linux and allows installation of your own applications, I don’t think it’s going to work. The most popular NAS choice is the Synology DS218+. That’s what I have personally, and it works well.
