Using raspbery pi 4 for recording

HI. Im cuurently using my laptop as the server...but am probably going to get a raspberry pi 4 . It seems to be more affordable then a shield and Nas box. Presumably these work pretty well? can anyone direct me with a step by step guide for raspberry pi4. Dumbed-down for a novice like myself!

Also do I need to preload anything on the raspberry pi. I have never used one but presume it needs to be set up?

I just set one up. Pretty easy to do following that page. Seems a little slow detecting commercials, but other than that, no issues with Channels DVR.
