Using RPI Won't stay connected

I have set up the DVR server using a RPI per the instructions. It starts up fine and works for about an hour. Then I can no longer connect to the unit, either thru dvr-server.local:8089, or the apps on IOS. If I reboot the RPI then it will work again for about an hour.

The drive is a 1tb SSD. For a test I installed the server on my laptop and using the same drive I had no problems. But the laptop won't always be connected so that is not a permanent solution for me.

Any ideas on what is going on and what I can do to fix the problem?

I've been using an RP 4b for over a year, and it's been flawless with a 4Tb WD USB 3.0 drive. It's also hardwired to my router. Is YOURS wired directly to your router, OR being used wireless?

If wireless, try it hardwired with an ethernet cable.

How do I do that?

Yes, it is hard wired.

Excuse my ignorance, but you're going to have to be a little more specific. I click on support and see options for email, forum, support articles, but nothing about troubleshooting or diagnostics.

Forget this, I found it. Sorry.

Been doing a lot of testing and it appears that whenever it starts to record is when it drops off. Usually about 5 minutes into the recording.

Any ideas on this or what I need to check?

Is your drive powered? Can you check the hdmi output to see what's happening?

Drive is not powered. Don't currently have the hardware to power it separately.

Can't easily check the HDMI output either. Only thing I can use for that is my TV and there is no easy way to get an ethernet cable there for the PI. Until I can get a long cable or figure out how to get the PI on WIFI can't do this.

THAT'S the reason you are having issues. The RP is not capable to power a large USB drive. You MUST power that separately with a power brick.
