Trying to use Sony XR-75X90J as DVR server. Enabled Developer options and "Force allow apps on external". Attached USB Samsung 500gb SSD for additional storage and moved most of the apps (including both Channels Client and DVR Server apps) to the SSD. Everything works great except when recording a show, get a low memory error and the Channels settings only shows 4GB (the Sony internal storage) available. I tried to format the SSD on a PC to NTFS and exFat and then the Sony wouldn't allow me to move apps to the SSD. Only when I let the Sony format the SSD (not sure what file system it uses) does it allow me to move apps. Suggestions please!
Running the server on a TV isn't supported. My Sony TV barely runs the client which is why I use Appletv
Wouldn’t the server go down when you turn the tv off? This seems like a bad idea. A case of just because it can be done doesn’t mean it should be done. Not supported on android tv may be a stretch as other people have done it and I think it’s even in the App Store. I think you would have a much better experience with a raspberry pi or pc
For a million reasons, most thst were listed, the answer is no.
The TV runs both the server and the client (loaded on the SSD) with no issues. Other clients run just fine even when the TV is off. Short (30 minute-ish) recordings work great. The only problem this setup has is that the recordings go to the TV's internal storage instead of the SSD. Had a server on a Shield but put it in the closet after the recent update fiasco. Plus I like having a few devices as possible hooked to the TV to minimize my wife/grandkids getting lost in the Inputs menu. Also have a server on a PC but it is WiFi and was looking for a hard-wired solution (TV is hard wired but ethernet to PC is not an option). Guess I'll have to live with the WiFi PC.
I guess you could try putting the server on the tv internal storage and set the storage option in the web ui to the external exFAT formatted drive
The server running on the TV, or (preferably) proper server hardware, has no bearing on this.
The client app would be on the same TV input you’ve been using regardless.
@dcooperfly
Don't let anyone tell you it cant be done. Whats worst that happens. You have fun tweaking & failing. Best case you succeed. Its fun being a power user. Texas Instrument didnt intend for you to play DOOM on a TI-83. Is it a good idea. Can it be done. Yes. . . .Don't let anyone tell you what you can't do with your tv.
Server on wifi still might be preferable to server on the tv itself
Go on ebay and get yourself a used intel Nuc or something else with a tiny footprint. Install Linux server so it is headless (you can ssh into it for remote management). Let it live behind your tv so you can use ethernet. Done...
Or the DVR fails when everyone is expecting to watch the big game or race, but your setup failed and now you're SOL and the bane of the neighborhood ...
Shhhhhh..... Don't discourage him. I wana see if server on tv can happen. Because it opens whole new world. Im going to install channels server on my roomba next.
I ran the server on my Sony x800H for about a year using a 250 GB memory stick. Sony's USB ports on TV are always live power. I constantly had buffering and channel loading issues. They got to the point of annoyance but Channels was still usable. A few months ago i switched to the Rasberry Pi with 4GB and Channels has been almost flawless. A server on a Sony TV can be done but I don't recommend it based on my experience.
I have a Sony TV and the whole GoogleTV system is unbearable. Ran out of memory with barely any app because it ran out of space getting the channel guide metadata. YouTube, of all apps, crashes often.
The channel client works great however. The only reason why I kept the network connection on this thing on, because actually changing channels on the AppleTV version of Channels is not as intuitive.
How so? What could be more intuitive than clicking up and down? (Settings > Playback > Remote Control > Channel Surfing)
The up/down buttons don't change the channel. Up shows the timeline, down shows the quick guide, from which have to scroll left/right to select another channel.
Another option is to press menu to go to the guide and select a channel from there.
With the TV version of the app however, the channel up/down and direct number inputs works
Yes they do. On the latest AppleTV Remote.
Sounds like you’re using the older one, though, that doesn’t actually have up/down buttons? Except for volume up/down, of course.
Depending upon how Sony implements CEC, you can also use your TV remote with Channels on the Apple TV. This includes using the Channel +/- buttons and numbers for direct input. You may even get the colored buttons, which you can assign to various functions within Channels.
(CEC support can vary wildly by manufacturer. Vizio supports only the bare minimum, but I believe Sony's is a bit more robust.)
@dcooperfly If it is in your budget, maybe lookup "powerline ethernet adapter" and use one of these from your network to your PC instead of WiFi.
Yes, I have the original Apple TV, and a harmony remote (no hub). I did not find the new buttons assignments on the remote.
The location where recordings are stored is configured by you on the dvr web UI. You can change it there so it goes to the correct place.
