Very Choppy or sometimes won't even stream

I have been using Channels DVR since it went first beta. Over the last few months I noticed streaming issues occurring and just getting worse. I tried to stream a program from my Mac mini (2014) edition and when I start to stream:

  1. Very choppy, I see video and hear audio for a 1/2 second then won’t play for another 10 seconds, then plays video/audio for another 1/2 second and does this in a loop. So play 1/2 pause 10 seconds. Never a constant play.

  2. or it will just play the audio only (but again very choppy).

The same applies to my iOS device and Windows 7 machine. Very choppy.

Here is my setup:
QNAP TS-251 NAS
wired local network

Channels setting has the following listed:
OSQNAP TS-251+
Linux Qts

This warning means the DVR is not able to write to your drive fast enough. Maybe it is failing.

These load averages are really high. It means your NAS cpu usage is at 100% because of something running on there. Probably explains the slow write issue too.

That is what I thought, but went on go into the NAS configuration the CPU is only at 55%-65%. Mind you RAM is at 85%.

The funny thing is when I go to my NVIDIA Shield TV and use Channels, it streams pretty good with only a few choppy spots. But from the web it is very choppy.

The web ui requires transcoding which requires CPU on your NAS.

You should figure out what’s using all that cpu in your NAS because it should be close to 0-10% if nothing is going on. Maybe a reboot will help.

So I recorded a 2 hour TV show from 7 to 9am. Channels DVR started to process recording and detect commercials at 9am and right now it is 1:18pm Central and it is still processing. Usually it takes 1 1/2 hours to do this task. I think this may be the issue. Would you agree?

If the cpu is busy then commercial detection will be slower. I think all the problems point to the same issue- something is hogging your NAS CPU.

I am doing a reboot now. I don’t know what changed on my NAS to cause this issue but Channels DVR used to work like a champ.

I have an NVIDIA Shield TV, would it be best to move Channels DVR over there instead. If I attach an external hard rive to the Shield TV will it use it as storage?

Honestly the NAS is probably a better fit for DVR. Can you go into the settings to see a CPU usage list? Maybe you installed some other app that started going crazy on there.

Can you tell me what the load averages mean.
load averages: 10.83 5.67 2.60

I rebooted and just waiting for things to load.

You have four cores in your CPU, so a load average of 4 means 100% cpu usage. The three numbers are 1min/5min/15min averages.

So I restarted my NAS and now CPU and RAM levels were nominal.

Channels DVR listed the following:

4 cores / Intel® Celeron® CPU J1900 @ 1.99GHz
load averages: 2.07 1.80 1.57

From my computer, I started to play the same recorded episode once again, and it played for about 3 minutes then the video disappeared shortly after that you just heard audio repeat itself over and over again. At the bottom of the log files there are several failures.

Here is the log file:

2018/03/05 16:24:22 [HLS] Resuming transcoder (out: 43m29.763689s, view: 38m26s)…

From the earlier logs, some of the recordings were corrupted because of the buffering errors. So that recording might be messed up and won’t play back correctlyz

Can you let me know why there would be buffering errors?

If buffering errors occur is there any way that you could indicate that on the setting web page to alert the user some recordings are corrupted and won’t play correctly.

It could be the same issue as before with the CPU usage. Your load average looks much more reasonable now, so whatever runaway process was hogging CPU got killed off during the reboot.

The usual reason for the buffering errors is because the drive is failing. The buffer overflow means the drive wasn’t writing the video file fast enough so parts of the video were lost.

This is a good idea, we definitely need something like this.

Thank you very much for the explanation.

However, now I am wondering if my external drives are causing the issue. I have 4 external drives (connected to a USB 3.0 hub) - (1 drive for movies, 1 for TV Shows, 1 for a backup, 1 for Channels DVR). Even though they are attached to a USB 3.0 connection could that cause the issue?

The external hard drive purchased was the Seagate Expansion 5TB Desktop External Hard Drive USB 3.0 (STEB5000100).

I don’t have enough space on the internal drive to store the Channel DVR recordings.

Has anyone else reported a similar issue to mine?

That’s a pretty unique setup.

I would say go to the guide and just record a bunch of stuff, and see if the log shows those buffering errors or not. If not, then your drive is probably fine and the issue was related to whatever CPU problem was happening before.
