Video stutters when connected through VPN gateway away from home

Here is my setup:

  • Channels server / VPN server on Synology NAS
  • Channels client of FireTV
  • VPN gateway on a raspberry pi that I carry when traveling

When I connect through the VPN gateway away from home and set the location as "at home", recorded videos stutter a lot.
When I set the location as "away from home" and just rely on the internet, without going through the VPN gateway, the videos play smoothly.
What can be the issue here?
Is it because the Synology NAS is on too much load when it's working both as the Channels server and VPN server?

Chances are your "at home" streaming quality is set to Original. Change it to match the "away from home" setting to have the same quality being served.

Also, depending upon which model of Pi, and which type of VPN, it could also be that the Pi is struggling, too.

They are both set to "original quality".

If that's the case, the overhead of the VPN is probably the issue. Either that, or stream format: original quality is MPEG-TS, while any other setting gives HLS.
